What is it with Snails!?!

Work this one out.......tank that's been set up for months, nothing new added recently....no changes apart from routine water changes and so on....and yet...........................
I have just noticed a snail on the side of my tank! Just one happily sitting there looking all sweet and innocent but I know that in a few weeks (if I was to leave it!! ) the thing would be multiplying like mad and the tank would be full as I have no clown loaches or similar for eating the snails!
I know some snails have their uses such as Apple snails and eating algae but.... GRRRR!!
How did it get there? Is it possible it's come through a tap during a water change?!?!

Yes I do have live plants and ornaments but they've all been there for months since the tank was set up!! Is it possible that it's been hiding all this time? It's only a little thing so not very old.
I don't feed live food, flaked and frosen and sachets of bloodworm (I don't think these are live?!)

they can hide all that time!thats proberbly where they came from.They prob came in as an egg on the plant and after afew weeks hatched.When they first hatch they are too small too see.You usually spot them at the earliest afew weeks after they hatched.I have them too.They dont cause me any problems.Beware where theres one there will be more.
they can also come into the tank in live food!

The plants I have in my tank have been there for a year!!! You're probably right though..I'm not doubting you...I just think it's funny actually! Some of the fish keep going up to it and nose-butting it gently trying to play with it or smell it or something!!!! (I have very 'strange' fish that I love completely!!)

no probs.I have strange fish aswell they carry my snails about the tank even though their too big to eat

Lol!! I thought mine were wierd!!!
I do so love them all though! Don't know where I would be without them!
