I've been trying for the last 3 weeks to get a few pairs of limia melanogaster from TriMar. First they thought they'd get them in later, now they're saying they can only get them at extortionate prices. WHY? I wouldn't have thought this would be a difficult or very expensive fish to breed.

Or is it that breeders think nobody wants them (clearly wrong as they get snapped up at TriMar).

When I was breeding my portholes, I ended up unable to give them away to the local shops: they said they "looked boring". Beautiful silver fish with bold black spots, hardy, amiable, suitable to a community setting, everything going for them, but apparently they "look boring". This from shops that are stocked to the gills with black widow tetras, X-ray tetras, red-eye tetras and any grey and dull looking tetra you can think of, not to mention blinking CAEs which combine the exciting appearance of a Scandinavian MP with an aggressive and unpleasant nature.

But if they're livebearers they've got to be a bright scarlet, otherwise they won't do.

I bought some baby khuulies, which I suppose were needed, but it's not the same (goes off muttering...)

Ive got a few pairs that Im trying to breed. The females have just got their black bellies so Im hoping I should have some fry within the next couple of months. If you can wait that long I could sell you some if you like. :good:

I can pm you the address of someone selling them

I am pretty sure that they are not 'impossible' to get hold of. They are a pretty easy fish and there will be quite a few breeders around with plenty of stocks.

I have just managed to get some fry from my tiger limias. Really gorgeous fish.

In the US they are tough to find as few people bother with them since they are so easy.. The Tiger Limias are really great fish and they too are very easy. I have had my colony about 5 years and they are my favorite Limia.

I have just cleaned my Tiger Limia tank out, I have about 15 fry.

I also have a few Sulfur Limia fry also so it is all good news.

The only one I really seem to be struggling with is the Limia caymenensis. I am down to my last female, don't seem to have too much trouble keeping the males alive

DG, I have managed to get you a couple of pairs of Limia melanogaster from Wholesale Tropicals in Bethnall Green, London.

I will be visiting Fish48 soon in Southampton, so if you want them then I can bring them down for you.

Don't say I never do anything for you :flowers:

Just thought I would update that my Limia melanotata have also had fry; just waiting for fry from the tridens, melanogaster and caymenensis and I will have had fry from all species of Limia which I hold.

Fry are in with parents at the moment, I may move them later.

Oh, I am so sorry I never got back to all you wonderfully helpful people! My computer died and I went away for the summer holiday without even knowing about all your kind offers. Thank you so much- this forum is such a brilliant place!

I have been able to locate some limias by now (melanogasters and humpbacks) and have fry from both species - but thank you everybody anyway! Hopefully a new computer should be in place by the weekend too.
