I get this order from Aquabotic on Tuesday. Right during Tropical Storm Fay. I unpack everything and all the plants look great, including the Java moss (Taxophyllum barterii is the new name I think, the name's changed). It was lovely and green, really healthy, beautiful portions. I spread it out and put it in my 36g for a few days that has 1.7WPG and CO2 injection to hold until I can get to planting my other tanks. So it's not like it went into a poorly run tank. I check on it this weekend and it's dead or very nearly so. Almost brown. The stupid Pogostemon and the HC are doing great and growing! But the java moss is dead.

Why do I have this thing with java moss, and come to think of it, java anything? I just can't grow it if it has java in the name. Java fern has never done well for me either. It really struggles too. I can grow anubias, bolbitis, Christmas moss, Marsilea, swords. I can grow A. reineckii in 1.4WPG with no CO2, so why can't I grow anything with the name Java in it.

Anybody else has this trouble or does your moderator suffer alone on this? This is really silly.

Your java (fill in the blank) murdering moderator,

llj

PS: Will be ordering new moss.

lmao, don't mean to make you feel bad llj but we can't kill the bloomin stuff!!!

it was doing so well in our tank that it took hold, outcompeted everything and killed off half the plants in the tank. stripped the tank down and got rid of it all, must have missed 1/2 strands and it's starting to come back now. to top it all off we took out some wood that was drowning in it, stuck it in a bin bag, i wanted to keep the wood so chucked it in the cellar meaning to sort it out later and forgot about it. remembered a couple of weeks later and the moss was still alive on the wodd.... so that's in a bin bag, in a cold cellar, out of water, no light or anything.... still alive and looking relatively healthy.

oh, the tank's stock lighting, no CO2 or anything like that, sand substrate, totally not geared up for high tech stuff.

maybe it doesnt like your water conditions although that still doesnt matter to much  I think there are much nicer mosses available anyway. willow moss is quite similar

It must really not like you

I recently tried to remove all the java moss from one of my tank, it was attached to some wood and affter getting all I could off the wood I ran it under the hottest water I could get out of the tap. To kill the bits of java moss still left. I put it back in the tank, and 3 days later it's vary clear that it didn't work.

Bud, it might not be you! A lot of growers grow java moss emersed, and when you submerge it it turns brown for absolutely ages before growing back. This is why I don't like java moss, preferring christmas moss and weeping moss.

See, you know the way to a mod's heart, by not blaming her!

Knowing me, I'll have better luck with Fissidens. I'll probably order some Christmas moss, it is my favorite.

I'd love some fissidens fontanus, but I have nowhere to put any. lol. When I mention buying new plants my wife gives me 'that look', and the lecture about why I spend so much on making my plants grow only to chop them off and bin lots (although I give more away these days, so a bit more eco friendly. lol).
