What Is Cycling

I don't know what it is. I am new to starting a tank and my friend was the one who started it. He said it was fine but should I have done it. I have had the fish for a month and none have died should i expect some to die if I didn't cycle. Help PLease.

This article here should help you. Chances are, your tank has already established beneficial bacteria and has almost finished cycling by now. Some more information on your tanks would help, such as size of tank and tank inhabitants. Do you have test kits for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? These kits will tell you if your tank has finished cycling, because ammonia and nitrite should be at 0 ppm, and nitrate should also be fairly low (<20ppm). HTH
