I live in San Antonio Texas and the temp is always around 76-80 degrees even though i have the heater unplugged and often add ice cubes in a vain attempt to lower the temp(they just melt instantly :/ )... My bala had ick a few days ago but once I added the ick treatment he was fine, still, what is an ideal tropical fish tank temp? When the bala got ick the tank was only at the temp of 78. -_-

I think ich is only a problem when the temp changes suddenly. Did you add colder water when you did a water change? I keep mine between 76 and 77. But everyone has a different opinion. Im pretty sure most fish can adapt to most temps, if it is done gradually. I try to keep on the low side of what the fish like. Warmer water will make them more active, but in colder water they live a bit longer, because the metabolism is slowed.

In the summer when it gets too hot (not often in the UK!) I freeze a 2 litre plastic bottle full of water and let that float around for a bit, it usually cools the tank b a few degrees (keep and eye on it though). Hope this helps! :D

I do the same, all of my tanks are currently heaterless for the summer. But I would advise against the ice cubes unless your tank is creeping up on 84+

My mature tanks are at 77F and fry growing tanks are at 80F. In some cases, tanks do reach above 82F due to room temperature but I never had ich after that one incidence, which was caused by a stressed platy.

I keep my tank at 82, solely for the sake of my precious discus.

Yeah maybe it was the cold created by the ice cubes that made my bala develope ick.

Nice idea with the frozen water bottle, thats going to be a great solution for next summer when the temp is around 105 degrees outside. :D
