Hi there again, i just at here watching my platies playing around and i got to thinking about cycling again. I have a 108ltr tank and have 5 fish in there to start the cycling process. They have been in there for 3 days now and i wondered what happens if any of them die. Do i have to replace them or not while cycling is taking place? I know the possibilities that i may lose one or two of them, i am doing 20% water changes every other day to help them cope with it better. Thanks.GRJ.

When cycling with fish, it really doesn't matter whether you replace them or not. The tank will only cycle for the fish load that is in there. Do you have a test kit and are you testing the water every day?

Yes i am testing water everyday and doing water changes every other day. Today the ammonia was 0, the nitrite was 0.25, the nitrate was 20 and the ph is 7. Its water change day tomorrow so i will test again after the change. I will keep you posted. GRJ

Actually, you shoud be testing the water before you do the change also to see what the levels are building to. It will also tell you how the cycling is coming. For instance, if your nitrate reading tomorrow before the water change is higher than 20ppm, then you know that both ammonia and nitrite are being processed to some extent. Checking afterwards gives you diluted results.
