well it all started when i was a little kid. my father is an avid fisherman, as was his father, so as am i.
i think that the first fish i ever kept was a rainbow trout. it was about four inches long, and we kept it for a week in a ten gallon tank that my dad had lying around in the house. it died, as it was destined to do in captivity. i feel bad about that one, but i was five. and my dad couldnt tell me no. after that i wanted to put something else in there, and my dad took me to my first fish store. i remember being amazed that there were so many fish that people actually kept in their house. i picked out a couple fish and we took them home. zebra danios. that was 22 years ago. we had a few tries at that but since my dad was always at work, and i was five, no water changes were done, and maintenance was pretty well neglected, my fish always died. the tank was eventually broken down, and it wasnt until i was 21 years old that i set up another tank. that happened when i was living in florida, and i convinced my girlfriend that i needed to have a fish tank. it so happened that a friend of hers had a husband who wanted to sell his thirty gallon tank for a hundred bucks complete with stand, light, filter, and everything. fish included. i bought it, and i ended up putting a jewel cichlid in the tank. the jewel cichlid wrecked every fish in the tank except some danios and a german ram. i was a cichlid guy from this point on. now i am a mts victim, with four tanks to my name.
i stole the ten gallon from my dads garage, which is home to danios, tetras, and rasboras. the thirty is cycling towards its planted tank destination, my 55 is a mbuna tank, and i have a 5.5 hospital with box filters at the ready. thats the story. oh and i am planning my entrance into a marine biology program next year at University of South Florida. and i have volunteered at a local aquarium in the F&I husbandry department.
