I was just wondering, because I remember exactly how I got hooked, how everyone got hooked on bettas? (most interested in sorrells and wuvs, as they have about 10000 bettas) Anywho here's my story.

As most of you know, I have a Green Spotted Puffer. When I got him, all of my friends wanted to fight him against a betta, I said no. They bought bettas, fought them, blah blah that's another story. I took the bettas they bought. Well, I came to this section of the forum, shortly after joining these forums, for help on bettas. Not too long after I was here I saw those MG bettas wuv was breeding. I thought they were too beautiful. And then I saw more, and thought, I've never seen these kinds before. I became most interested in the crowntails. So, after looking up a place far away in Pheonix, I took a trip down there to buy one. Bought him, took him home, and the sickness spread from there. :p

Well if you aren't most interested in mine then I'm not going to share!! :grr:

 Actually... I'm going to bed and MAYBE I'll type it up later, if you're nice. :p

yeh before i came to the forum i thought the only bettas you called get were called "long finned fighting fish" and then i saw the others, thats how i got hooked

About 10 years ago, one of my friends got married and moved from Chinatown to Queens. He had an aquarium and, at the time, I wasn't an aquahobbyist. I went with him a couple of times to the LFS on St.Francis Blvd. I was more enamoured with the saltwater ghost eel than I was with anything else. Then going past the freshwater section, I saw these isolated fish. At the time I didn't realize they were "betta barracks". Some of these isolated fish were red and some were blue. All I knew about them was that they fought - sort of like the the aquatic version of a cockfighter. I didn't pay much attention to them other than that their fins were flowy-like everytime they moved. It was an afterthought. Later on, maybe a few month or a year later, I entered the petstore at the New Jersey mall located in Pavonia. I saw the same fishies in a little jar. Again, an afterthought. I just went there to look at the puppies. It was about this time last year when I was up watching an episode of La Femme Nikita. Nikita posed as a prostitute in order to infiltrate this russian slavegirl ring. For a large amount of cash, clients could watch the girls fight to the death in a round pool about 4 ft deep. One girl wore red, the other wore blue. In order to signify the beginning of the deathmatch, a blue betta was poured into the glass of the red betta. What captured my interest was "Can these guys be kept in a container with no filtration and stuff?" And sure enough, I went to my LFS to check up on things. My first betta was a regualr run-of-the-mill steelblue veiltail. Not as attractive as the ones I have now, but very aggressive and interacts with anybody approaching his bowl. He loved to be fed and watched. He lives in a better place now. I gave him (one of two) to my doorman and he set them up in a filtered and divided 10g. However, my doorman fed them "live" food - and I'm not talking about worms, either. He fed them feederfish. For the first month, the betta would kill them and eat them. But then as time went on, he didn't kill them. He just established dominance and then didn't even bother them.

Well, that's my story. :) *tucks in your blanket while you sleep*

Well, like many people I had my first betta in my college dormroom. I have always kept fish, but that was all I had room for in the dorm. :*) Well, time went on and Indigo went to the big fish pond in the sky, I moved away from the dorm and bettas, not fish though. My husband and I have alot of fish  (serious mts, 11 tanks not counting bettas) and our daughter had been begging for a tank of her own (4 yrs old, starting her off right, ). So one day in februrary I think, we were in Petsmart picking up frozen food and she saw the glowing display of bettas, huge lighted grouping of brillantly colored fish=happy  four yr old :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: . We finally relented and brought home one of her choosing. Pretty soon, I was loving the little guy and looking for more. I now own 14 adults and have my first batch of fry growing out as we speak.

I have been a big fish keeper for years since I was 8 ....( I think , I know it was around that time ) anyways my wife has always liked the bettas and always would buy one and put him in my 55 , i would come home and he would be ok for a few days to a few weeks, but eventually would die. I would tell her not to buy any more of those "damned" fish that would die. I didnt want them to get my others sick. Because I couldnt keep one alive. Anyways after a few years of us murdering bettas my wife saw a CT and wanted one for our daughter. I told her if I could keep one alive we would invest in a CT. after a few months of research and killing to wonderful VTs, I got hooked because of this awesome looking VT we got from petsmart. Then I wanted a CT too and then it went from there.

I got into breeding them after reading on this forum how people were doing it. I had initially planned to breed guppies and try to develop a cool new color. But after reading up on bettas and the challenges that faced me, I knew bettas were for me. Plus they have some wonderful personality

well my dad said that I could get a tank. We wanted to do some goldfish in it because they were cheap so we went to Walmart. They had a nice betta collection with alot of pretty bettas, and there was this one that just aught my eye. Very nice and mellow, Even though there were nicer ones there I just had to get this one. Its like we connectedright there. So when he died I replaced him, and am still replacing him. So I guess thats who it started.

And the thing that I regreate is that I never replaced him with any of the cute little females I saw there.

I like them because they are pretty and they are peaceful and they live long and I actually bonded with my betta who died. He was so cute! :/ lol

well about 3 months ago, my 3 year old sister said she wanted a fish.

So being such a great sister that i am, we wnet to the fish store to pick out a fisht aht could live in a bowl. I knew squat about fish back yet, just knew that they needed water and food...who know about aeration and filtraion and all tat  so we went to petsmart, and i asked if i could keep a goldfish in a bowl and the lady said that wouldn't be good since they wouldnt' last too long. Instead she recommended us bettas. Now i've always walked past these jars and have kept 2 myself when i was young, but too young to rmemeber anything about them.

So we picked up a blue vt for my sister..and it eventually became my fish (you can't really expect a 3 year old to take care of one), and i decided that i wnated another one. So we went back adn picked out a red vt...

and the disease spreads from ther :shifty: now i have 9 male bettas, 6 females and a bunch of fry  it spreads liek wildfire i tell you!

I got a Tank at Xmas 2003 and then Joined these Forums and that was it, I had to have a betta after looking at Wuvs and Sorrells and Julies
