I picked up a small convict from the LFS a few days ago, and it's very timid and passive toward other fish, which worries me cause sometimes my firemouth (which is in the same tank, and is also young) can have a bit of a temper

I'm making the assumption that it's a girl, since its got rounded fins and is very passive, but at the same time, all the small cichlids in the tank had rounded fins, so I had a thought that perhaps that when they're young (as in, around an inch to an inch and a half long) they don't have much of a difference in appearance based on sex

I've got some pictures, though it's kinda camera shy so they're not so easy to get

The firemouth, also to be noted, is still a bit larger than the convict, and a bit aggressive, so I think it's possible the convict is timid because of the firemouth is larger and kinda mean

I'm thinking I might either move the firemouth to another tank or bring back the convict for a bigger one, (they had one of similar size to the firemouth that was noticeably male, but I usually try to get the smallest of the bundle so I can watch them grow myself)

this is the best picture I could get, but I'll try to get more of this isn't good enough

thanks much <3

Cichlids by nature can be quite aggressive does not matter male or female, sorry but pictures not showing, maybe a problem with my laptop?
what size is tank?
try to re arrange tank so theres lots of hiding places, also rem you have added a new fish to the firemouths territory.

From what I've read, convict females are usually less aggressive and smaller than the males. I'm a little worried that if it is a female, it might not be able to stick up to the firemouth's occasional aggression.

The tank is a 40g, lots of hidey holes, gonna add more in the future.

here's another picture, I think, I dunno if these are working

the hints of blue on the fins and pink on the face aren't visible to the naked eye, but my camera has color enhancing on it, so it picks up on it and makes the colors more visible.

Is there gold on the body? If so it's definitly female. Males do not have any gold colouration at all. :)

Yep females have an orange belly and usually colour on the fins, can't see the image either.

I think you might have the pictures saved in the wrong format. Try to send again as jpeg.

I haven't heard that one before, don't think I've ever seen a gold convict, usually their gender is distinguished by blue fins and pink to orange belly

I've just been trying to use the whole "insert image" thing, which tells me to use an http link, so I've been getting it directly from the internet rather than from my computer files, which leads me to believe I am not doing this right
