what fish

i want a fish that readily breeds , protects it's eggs/young and is compatible with livebearers. should not grow more than 3-4 inches.
this is for a 55 gallon tank.

What kind of livebearers? What's your water's pH? You could try rams - bolivian rams are hardier. If you have larger livebearers such as swordtails and mollies (platioes should be ok too), then you may get a pair of kribs instead. You could also try keyhole cichlids but they get to 4-5". Kribs usualy are just under 4" and rams get to about 3".

Plus there's always apistos, they look awesome.
