Hello all, i had fish many years ago when i was a kid but have decided to get some more, i have set up my tank a week ago and added the plants today, i was reading a book which said to wait 36 days before adding fish, would everyone agree or do you think it would be ok to add them a bit sooner

I have a 35l oval tank just a sort of starter kit (would like to expand later on) and really want to get some angel fish, do you think the tank is to small for this or would it be ok to get 3 or 4

my brother in law has a tank and he has mostly tetras, i know these are good to start with but im really looking for something other that these

all comments and suggestions would be greatfully apreciated

thanks

The tank is too small for angels, and you should probably look into reading the thread about "cycling a tank", before you put any fish in.

Hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

Your tank would definitely be too small for angels. They need at least 30 gallons. For the tank you have, you are very limited on what you can stock. If you have the room, I would suggest returning it and getting the largest tank you have space/funds for. Larger tanks offer more stocking options plus they are easier to maintain.

Simply leaving a tank for 36 days doesn't cycle it. There has to be an ammonia source to feed the bacteria and it has to be large enough in order for the bacteria to reproduce to great enough numbers to handle the bio-load of the fish stock. As far as adding the fish, a fishless cycle is the safest way to go unless you can get some filter media from an established tank to jump start the cycling process. Even then, the tank still has to cycle but the media will greatly speed it. Here is a link on fishless cycling and this link is on cycling with fish.

Welcome to the forum Purds. I would talk to your brother in law. If you can get some of his filter media and place it into your own filter, it will jump start your cycle. I would do a fishless cycle using the pinned topic, accessible using a link in my signature. If you get that filter sample into your filter, you should be verifying that you are ready for fish in about a week instead of a month plus. That can make all the difference if you are impatient about getting fish going.
