What Fish

hello folks i have a rio 180 (40 gallon) aprox and a teratec 1200 filter.at the moment i have some africans in it but want to have a single pet fish.any suggestions on what type of fish as i dont want something to big as it would be cruel

Climbing perch - Anabas testudineus. You may not share my enthusiasm for this fish but I think they're beautiful and they only get to 10" max. A little shy at first and it'd like a nicely planted setup. They breathe air.

If, like I said, you're not interested in this lovely anabantoid, perhaps ask this same question in the oddballs section - you'll probably get more relevant answers there. (You may also want to check hybrids and New World cichlids). Maybe consider one of the snakehead species. Not all grow very large.

If I were in your position, I'd be planning my next community or maybe an interesting biotope setup

To be honest Africans are nothing but trouble and you wont get a moments peace from them! just keep an eye on them.
