Wel, it's a pleco :D

Not sure of the variety though. If it's a common plec it will continue growing to between 12" - 18" so make sure you have room.
Hopefully someone with a bit more experience with plecs will solve the mystery :)

That looks like a common pleco. They get really big and produce a lot of waste. If you don't have a big tank, I'd take him back to the store. If you have a small tank and are looking for an algae eater, 2-3 otocinclus catfish would be a better choice most likely.

well he's been in a 2ft square tank for the last 4 years and seemed happy, he is in my 3ft now

definately a common plec. As long as you have enough filtration than he can live just fine in a 3 ft. tank. Because of the mellow persona's they don't need quit as much space as their size would suggest, but they can pollute your tank quit quickly without adequate filtration!

the tank has a brand new fluval 4 filter, i have to set it on min though as a tad powerful

If you mean an internal fluval 4+ filter, then pop down to your LFS and get a fluval spray bar kit. Only about £3 and it'll stop that massive current from the filter by dispersing it along the back of the tank!! plus you can angle it up to agitate the water surface and create more surface area for oxygen exchange!!
BTW that plec looks exactly like my gibbiceps plec. Very similar to the Common, but has a massive dorsal fin!!
