What Fish Is This?

cha, i will, i didnt plan on keeping it unless i had to, but its freaking cold outside for this week, i think im going to wait til saturday to release him, its jsut too cold for him to have to adjust to the temerature AND the animals of the lake >:

Cold! Your in Florida don't start talking about cold :P . We have sunfish up here in Wisconsin and they do just fine in the lakes when it is -15 out and they are covered in ice. He's still at risk in that little one gallon bowl and being stressed till the weekend is not going to help him survive in the lake. Not to mention he isn't going to eat when he is stressed.

I would still advise strongly against releasing ANY fish. Even if the species is native, they can contaminate local waters foreign pathogens that they've been exposed to during handling at wholesalers, fish store, and tanks.

I'm with Loachman...the fish hasn't really even been identified as native yet and could be harboring any number of non-native pathogens.

Update: he does have vertical stripes, dark grey ones i put a worm in there and it took a bite out of it, but didnt finish it but he changed colors when he did. it hasnt eaten since i got it and it wont eat worms, pellets, flakes, bread, or anything... maybe its not hungry or stressed. i plan on moving him to a ten gallon tank later...but none of my tanks are set up, and it could take a while to set it up... i kinda like him, i dont really want to release him cause im so curious to see what its gonna look like when its grown. what should i do? how do i get it to eat ?

it could be just me but it kinda looks like a bluegill. i know they can look very similar to sunfish, but it really looks more like a blue to me.

Well if you want to keep it, it need ideally a 40 gal tank. With lots if cover and hidey places. He will eat once he's in a tank where he feels safe.

i have a 40 gallon, but i did have plans for it, but i wouldn't mind keeping it in there for now, until i can find a place for him, and when i know what he is. the problem is, i am moving in 2 weeks an cannot set it up until everything in the house is set up, which takes about a week in itself. And by set up i mean water in tank, and not much else. i wanted to cycle thi tank, but that little guy cant live in there while its cycling. -,- cha... hes gonna have to get used to the bowl for a while, or live with my goldfish... >:

98% guaranteed death before 2 weeks in that bowl.

No heater

Stagnant water
High stress
Improper diet.
High stress
No Space

Move it now, or prepare the spot in the ground.

Sorry, I'm not a sugar-coater.

thats ok, sugar coating is a bad thing. but im going to edit your list, it has a heater, though i dont think it needs it, since its a lake fish, but i bought one when i brought it home. I keep a cover on it at all times. i could put a filter in it, since i have a 2 gallon filter from my old desktop tank, but that would add to his "no space" issue. like i said, have a 10 gallon im gonna move him to soon, the 40 is jsut too big to move ones its set up.
