I just moved all the community fish into the bubble, and am going to set up a death tank  Anyway, I plan to put a senegal bichir in there, and am looking into tank mates. I plan to have polished marble (black countertop cutoff) and sand substrate. What would be some good tank mates? Violet goby? Black knife? Bueller?

Your tank is too small for Bichirs, the upper jaw species like Senegals, Palmas etc are all active swimmers and your tank is a tad too small for them, its way too small for the Black Ghost knife, mebe look at Nandus, Ctenopoma, etc...

I compleatly agree with Dark, if its a "death tank" you could consider Chaca chaca or a S. sanchezi piranah amoung other things.

I think I have my heart set on a bichir, and as near as I can tell the senegals were the smallest. I figured I could get away with one of them in there. And maybe not so much of a death tank, just an ill-tempered one...

Bichirs really aren't ill-tempered at all. I have 9 bichirs and they all seem like happy-go-lucky predators to me. :p

That tank isn't big enough for a senegalus, imo. They are extremely active and I wouldn't recommend putting them in a tank that is less than 48"x18". If you really want predators, go for leaf fish, nandus, etc, suggested earlier in this post. If you are really really set on getting a bichir, get a bigger tank.

EDIT: I just realized that I have a tank with the exact same dimensions... and it has made me even more adamant about not putting a bichir in there. There just isn't enough surface area in that tank.

I have 2 10" Polypterus, Palmas and a Senegal they are in a 65gall tank, and they use the entire length, depth and the height. So really really think about it before putting one in that tank.

If your heart is set on one, then get yourself a larger tank first

what about 15-18 dwarf puffers? Are there any fish other than ottos that don't end up on the menu? Would a violet goby end up in component parts? I plan on having sand for a substrate...

I probably say this everytime someone asks for an unusal fish for a relatively small tank: Red fin wolffish / rainbow wolffish (Erythrinus erythrinus).
