as you might know im in the process of a cycle

i want to plain my fish i want
i want to get

guppys
neons
cherry barbs
sucker fish
i also want a shark

what else could i get i dont want them to kill each other

how bigs your tank mate because you could have alot of options depending

a tank of that size is not big enough for a red tailed, rainbow, albino or any other shark....

what would you recommend mattlee? just small fish? its only for my son whos 18 months

would like fish that aint all the same colour

If he likes colour i would go for a pair of apistogramma. Most types will work but i would go for apistogramma agassizii or fire red apistogramma agassizii and a type of small shoaling fish
so
1 pair of apisto (1male 1female)
8 ember tetra or galaxy rasbora or 6 small tetra like neons

or if you up the temp to 28-30C
1 pair of german blue rams (1male 1female)
6 rummy nose tetra

thats how i got restarted into fish keeping by buying my daughter a tank to look at the fish... i now have 5 tanks running from 2ft up to 6.5ft and ive just sold 3 tanks and have another up for sale
so if it is just for your 18 month old son then something active and colourfull is ideal. fish like cardinal tetras have amazing colouring but they do best in as big a group as poss as do all tetras and barbs etc. so if you dont want all the same colour fish then maybe tetras arent the way forward. for a real bright mixed colour in a tank of that size maybe different coloured guppys and endlers, not very original but they are very bright and you can get loads of different colour forms. they always catch my 3 year old daughter eye at the shops, especially the pink/purple ones :grr:
as you, i mean your son.... get better experiance in fish keeping then you will become familiar with many beautifull fish that are available. german blue rams are very sensitive and i would never suggest them to a novice keeper due to their fragile state. they require soft, warmer, acidic water and very clean water too. without these factors the gbr wont live long and the last thing you want is your son asking where the pretty fish has gone
if im being honest guppys and endlers are not my cup of tea but for activity and colours they are hard to beat for a first fish :good: maybe a small group of corydoras to give the bottom of the tank some activity too....

Hi Chris,

You do have a lot of options!
Going by the fish I have that my kids love the best, I'd recommend; Bristlenoses (I saw that you wanted a sucker fish; be careful as some of them grow to the length of your tank!; the bristlenoses grow to only 4 or 5 inches; they'll probably breed as well if you can get a pair), livebearers like swordtails, platys, guppies and endlers (just try and get either all males, or two females to one male if you don't mind them breeding) and the hardier dwarf chiclids like apistogrammas or kribensis.

All of those a relativly easy to keep and are not too fussy about pH or hardness and most of them have the possibility of breeding for you (well, if you have livebearers, you won't be able to stop them!)

I'd totally back up mattlee's advice not to have any kind of Ram; they are extremely delicate (some people consider them more difficult than Discus!)
