Hi All, the boyfriend and I have just got the keys to a new place and the current owners left me a silver shark in a tropical tank. He is around 5-6" and was hiding... I read that you have to have a minimum of 2-3 other fish in the tank to make them feel secure so went and brought two angels from the local fish shop. Needless to say he is actually showing his face more :)

Anyway, I would like to keep smaller fish but I know all the time that I have him in the tank I am a little limited on what fish I can get... Can anyone suggest what other fish should be ok to put in there when I do want to add some extras? :good:

hi congrat's on your new place, and a free tank to boot :hyper:
What size tank do you have as will need to know on what to reccomend, silver sharks are better in groups, the older they get the more skittish they get and boy do they move, I have four in a 5/2/2ft tank and thats abit small in my oppinion...also where you have a 6inch you cannot go to small like neon tetra as they will eat them, unless you was to rehome the shark, and basically start a fresh

nelly i though all sharks should be kept singaly? as they are teritorial? or are silver sharks different to this rule? and the size of the tank would be helpful rain :)

Nope silver sharks are the exception, big groups they feel more at ease, they also need very large tanks as nelly says.

To the OP tank size really is needed to suggest which fish to get and which fish you may have to rehome.

ah i see. learn something new everyday! i have a RTS unfortunatly lol

i wish someone would take mine nelly i got him when i first started fishkeeping and the LFS said he would be fine with me SAE and guppies.... or not :(

Hi All, thank you for replies :) I should have thought to have put the tank size

Anyway, tank size is 1ft 1" deep, 2ft 6" long and 2 ft high... They use to have 4 silver sharks in there but I think it may have been too small...

Temp is around 24-26C

It's still way to small for 1 silver shark unfortunately so you will need to rehome him :(, the angels should be fine if the tank is 2 foot high, what other fish do you like?, possible community tanks stands out with maybe platies, swords and possibly guppies.

Thanks Jen, this is a free tank but we will hopefully be getting a much longer tank (the furniture type) in the next few months.
I am currently trying to find out what other people have with the Silver Sharks with out them being eaten... i would hate to buy some fish i liked and they get eaten *gulps*

I can see what your saying but even now the tank you have is way to small for the shark, it also will need more of it's own kind and wont be happy untill and thats going to boost the minimum tank size again, there is really no point in telling what size or what fish are compatible unless we know when exactly you plan on upgrading and what size tank your upgrading to ie.. dimensions?.

I know it's a very round about way of doing things ..but.... unless these things are covered then it really isnt a question that can be answered.

The aim is a 6ft long tank in a couple of months.

Perfect size tank for a nice large group of silver sharks, however they can and do reach 12 inches + (albiet slow) so most actually SMALL fish in time will become a snack, which i would imagine rules out the fish i mentioned above... now really it would be a choice of fish of your liking..cichlids maybe?, nelly will be able to help you far better there.

You could buy a nice plec which will love a six foot tank.. ie common varieties but the tank would have to be 6x2x2 for when it gets to it's larger size of 10-12 inch +

A group of angelfish and bigger gouramis would be good with the sharks. Just watch out for fin nipping.

Silver Sharks are very very gentle, they just have big gobs on them when they get big, same rule for all fish with a big mouth, if it fits in their mouth then they will eat it.

Lots of fish can go with them, all your catfish like Corys and plecs, personally, i would go for a shoal of 10 - 15 corys of one species, they swim like crazy and clean up well, maybe even up to 20 of them!

Rainbow fish are great too! The reds, blues and bosemani's are stunning, the parkinsons as well! Angels, Keyhole Cichlids, Jewel Cichlids, Laetacara/Nanacara species of cichlids, Rosy Barbs are a nice colour, some big mollies, Denisonii Barbs, Larger Tetras or Rasbora species, Giant Danios, Big gouramis like the Opaline, 3 spot and Goldens, pink kissing gouramis (though these can be more aggressive but... they are hilarious) so much choice! But Silver sharks are a stunning species.
