Nothing beats plants. I have a (plastic) half-barrel in the garden filled with surplus aquarium plants and a few potted pond plants (Acorus, hairgrass, and a sundew). It contains probably about 20 gallons of water. For the last few weeks I've had four Corydoras paleatus swimming about in there. Besides all the daphnia and mosquito larvae they can catch, I also give them regular catfish pellets every other day. The "pond" has a deep bed of sand and lots of decaying plant matter. No filter, just the plants and a lot of hair algae.
Nitrates and nitrites are ZERO.
If I could keep my indoor aquaria as healthy as that neglected "pond", I'd be a happy man.
Cheers,
Neale
