WHAT EVENT GOT YOU HOOKED ON FISH KEEPING ?

WHAT FISH WAS IT?

HOW LONG AGO WAS IT?

HAVE YOU HAD ANY LAPSES WITHOUT FISH AND HOW LONG?

The event that got me hooked= a friend moved in to a new house and the owner had these fish that he was going to throw over the fence(did not want any longer)
so my friend called me and asked me<--big heart no brain i said sure so i went out and bought a 10g tank and all accesories.

Well i got there and this fish happend to be a 12" pacu and a 5" pleco that had to live in that 10g untill i got paid( felt so sorry) for a week.

that was 8-9 months, 7 tanks and 100 fish,1 lobster and 1 clam ago :D

as of yet no lapses and no loses  knock on wood.

I hadn't had a betta of my own in a while, and one day I decided to get one to keep me company at my computer desk... shortly thereafter I realised what a great personality he had and began researching bettas extensively. That was about two years ago, and now I have nearly 20 bettas, a senegal bichir, and a midas hybrid and oscar that I absolutely love to death
If I hadn't already been pretty deep into the fishkeeping hobby by the time I got my oscar, he would have cinched the deal. I'm in hook, line, and sinker!

I got hooked after my brother in law got a tank. He upgraded to a 55 gallon and sold me his 10 gallon. But hey, it's a start! I'm just starting with 2 pristella tetras, 2 gold zebra danios, and some kind of java fern. I'd like to add a dwarf ram or two.. and maybe a plecostimus.

WHAT EVENT GOT YOU HOOKED ON FISH KEEPING ? My mom got me a 2g hex with a betta when I was 6. Betta died, got two guppies when I was 7. Guppies had babies when I was 8, got a 10g.

WHAT FISH WAS IT? Bettas/guppies

HOW LONG AGO WAS IT? 10 years

HAVE YOU HAD ANY LAPSES WITHOUT FISH AND HOW LONG? Didn't have fish for about 2 years unless you count the goldfish in the pond.. but I'm not getting rid of my babies any time soon and I keep upgrading tanks, so hopefully there won't be any more lapses!

I had been pestering my hubby for a dog but, since we live in an apartment he suggested fish instead. At first I was annoyed and upset (for some reason fish had always creeped me out abit :*) ), but I finally gave in and we got our 25 gallon tank just over a year ago.. soon after I found this forum and now I'm HOOKED!! :p We still just have our one tank at home and I have a betta on my desk at work... but i'm hearing that a 35 or 40 gallon tank is supposed to be coming our way for free very soon :D Now, everyone at work wants a betta too and I'm being known as the 'fishy lady'

oh yeah.. I did end up getting my dog last fall too. Funny how we girls always end up getting what we want in the end ;)

event: went fishing and thought about acually keeping fish
what fish was it:common goldfish/betta
how long ago: 8 years ago
lapses: no fish for 5 years, parents didnt want to buy me anymore fish cause i was only 7 and i wasnt strong enough and was too lazy to lift the 10 gallon tank to change the water(parents didnt buy me a filter or siphon) the goldfish lived for about 1 year in brown water so brown you couldnt see the fish if it was 3 inches away with only 2 water changes and were fed 1-2 times a week. betta lived for about 1 years until the jumped out cause i topped it off

Red tailed black shark, a friend setup his first tank and his first fish was a RTBS.....I was instantly hooked.

My first fish?.... a RTBS of course.

Still got him know 3 years on! :)

Okay, here goes. I got into fish keeping because of my cat. She is an old Persian cat I had for 10 years. When we were putting in a new bathroom floor one day, she disappeared. We looked everywhere, posters, contacted local vets, humane societies, etc. She was gone for 20 days. One night I heard a noise under the bathroom floor. You guessed it. Jynx was home!!!

We spoiled her so rotten when we got her back. She had always loved watching the birds out the window and I thought "I'll get a little fish bowl and set it up for her to watch the fish swim around." My little fish bowl turned into a 20 gal tank and my first fish were gouramis and zebra danios. As for the cat, Jynx is jealous of the time I spend with the fish and will sit with her back turned toward the tank until she has had enough. :X Then she will come over and start meowing for me to pay attention to her.

I've had the tank set up for about 3 months now. I did have a tank 20 years ago but gave it away when my son was born. I couldn't keep up with both of them. :dunno:

WHAT EVENT GOT YOU HOOKED ON FISH KEEPING ? - I got into fish keeping after watching Finding Nemo :look:

WHAT FISH WAS IT? - just the regular, livebearers

HOW LONG AGO WAS IT? - about a year ago

HAVE YOU HAD ANY LAPSES WITHOUT FISH AND HOW LONG? well when i was a kid I had a betta, after he died I stopped getting fish...When I was around 18 I setup an old 10 gallon tank and got like 6 goldfish (yes, I got goldfish, but I didn't know about them until I joined this forum :p) but then I didn't really want the goldfish anymore so I gave them to a friend of mine who has a pond. So after that I stopped getting fish, then I watched Finding Nemo and a week later, I set up a tropical 10 gallon tank  Now that 10 gallon isn't being used. Now I have a 38 gallon, 20 gallon, and twelve 1-2.5 gallon bowls/tanks :p
I also have 2 empty 10 gallons, 2 empty 5 gallons, and 1 empty 5.5 gallon. You know, If I found room...I can have many more bettas :shifty:

i won 4 goldfish at a fair!!!i felt so sorry for them i started reserching how to care for them properly, then i realised they couldnt b kept in a bowl so i asked my mam and dad for a tank.but it was tropical so the goldies went in my friends pond and i got my first fish (mollies)they died so then i learnt abiut cycling...now i cant help it i need more tanks!

WHAT EVENT GOT YOU HOOKED ON FISH KEEPING ?I live in an apartment that doesnt allow pets...since I grew up with a pet(s) always around, there was something missing. The only thing I could have gotten was an aquarium, so I did, I got a 10g and then moved up to a 20g and 3 betta tanks. I'm sure glad I did get into fishes because I wouldnt give it up for nothing right now!! Never knew it was so addicting.

WHAT FISH WAS IT?
Guppies, Platys, Swords & Bettas

HOW LONG AGO WAS IT?

HAVE YOU HAD ANY LAPSES WITHOUT FISH AND HOW LONG?
I've had a few deaths in the beginning (was way overstocked) but everything seems fine now and I hope it stays that way. Was never a time since I got my first tank that i was without fish.

A year and a half ago my sister and her boyfriend brought home a 5 gallon tank with 2 ID sharks and 2 peppered cory's...After a few days I took over the maintenance and got hook....It was a disaster at first as I didn't know anything about fishkeeping so I went to the LFS(PJ's) and bought a whole load of fish...This LFS suck because they just sold me fish and never told me about the new tank syndrome and all that...They actually rip off my sister, they sold them the 5 gallon tank and everything separate and it cost her $100 it doesn't even had a canopy or lid....Anyways I ended up looking at google for an answer and found this forum and after i figure out everything(thanks for all your help and advice) everything else is smooth sailing....I went from the 5 g to a 10 g, then to a 33 g, and my current 75 g....In this spand I had kept mostly community fish, but I had Discus on the 33 gallon with my rams which I had kept the longest, but have to give it up due to the fact that I can't keep up with the maintenance and school/work...I miss them, but I love my current set up right now....African cichlids are cool and very hardy.........I now work on a good LFS and is more obsess about this hobby...I can never have enough fish...lol...Thiking of setting up a marine tank now....Can you say i'm in too deep now... :D

I suppose tropicals first started when i bought a 10gallon tank to raise some pond fish fry in then a year later after they went into the pond i wanted to put something in there except i quickly realised it was quite small for anything so bought a cheap 25galon stocked that with your usual and stuck some crabs in the 10 gallon.

My very first fish were neons tetras unfortunately but they didn't get me hooked. It was having the rudd fry in the 10g that made me want tropicals.

I bought my first Tropicals late July last years so aorund 8 months now, now with a touch under 350 gallons to my name (and still growing).

and since then there hasn't been a time without fish. I'ved always admired our pond fish which i got more into first hence the raising of the fry (only 1 death out of 35!!)

What event got you hooked: I had fish when I was little, and have always been a aquarium junky, so when we decided to get our kids a tank for xmas so they could have a pet I kinda took it over.

What fish was it: We were going to go with small easy to replace fish so we started with Tetras but we have since moved on to Roseline shark, otto and Apisto as our fav.

How long ago 5months but we already have three tanks and working on hubby for the fourth.

No lapse in sight. When the kids are yelling and crying it brings me a great calm to sit and watch my fish. I have to be careful with the balance of fish. We had 4 zebra danios at first ( they were sick when we got them no signs of diease but they didn't make it much after cycle they just never seemed right ?. ) But While they were in the tank I did not enjoy looking at the tank for to long to active and they kinda picked on each other, instead of a calming thing it to closly reflected my day to day life as a stay at home mom. My hubby tells me I willed them to death with all my neg thoughts but I swear I would never hurt a fish and they had the best water my tap and some declor could provide :)

I had the ol' carnival goldfish as a kid. Sea monkeys made their debut. Then for about 15 years I didn't keep any aquatic pets. I considered some sort of frog at one time as I have a collection of over 200 frog items, but never did. Then three years ago I started thinking about getting fish, mainly for my cat's enjoyment. I was thinking a couple goldfish or something. So I started looking into the cost of supplies and such but didn't really get serious. I got to talking with a coworker about her fish tank she had at the time, tropical community. It sounded great. Then one day she came home to find her tank had somehow sprung a leak, all over her living room carpet. They got rid of the surviving fish. I offered to take the tank a and supplies to see if I could fix it. While workign on that (I eventually bought a new tank, it was only a little 10 gallon), I began to look at fish at a local fish store. I decided to start simple and small, mollies (hence my former user name Many_A_Molly). Being the research hound that I am, I started reading all I could. Somehow I stumbled across this forum, which saved me a lot of trouble when I finally did start up my tank. I no longer have any of those original fish, Big Momma died a few months back. But one of her daughters is still ruling the 20 gallon. I think I will always have a fish tank or two now.
