I have a 75 gallon with 9 swordtails (1 Male & 8 Females) Right now. Besides guppies, platys, and mollies what other fish can i put in there? How many fish can I put in there all together?

Thank You

well thats all you common livebearers, which area of the tank are you looking at fish for? (top/middle/bottom)

Livebearers? Non livebearers?

Check out some schooling fish in a tank that size. Harlequin Rasbora are great fish. They're relatively inexpensive, at least for me here in Los Angeles. I can get them for $.75 each. I have about fifteen in my 55-gallon.

I'd recommend a Mystery Snail. You can get one at any PetSmart or PetCo.

If you have a planted tank, Ghost Shrimp are really inexpensive and good for ground cleanup of missed food particles.

Corydora Catfish are great for bottom dwellers.

i would try some bottom dwellers! some of them clean the tank a little such as a bristle nose pleco. My loaches dont seem to be good cleaners.

I am looking for any type fish that will get along with my swordtails. I was thinking about some bottem dwellers to help clean the bottem but I am not sure which to get. I would love to get a big school of fish. I have 2 live plants in my tank right now and a few fakes. I need to get some more decorations for my tank too. About how many fish can I put in my tank so its not over crowded but looks full (know what I mean)?

Thank You again

erm hmm there is a rule but i keep forgetting it, but it really depends on the size of the fish you get, i.e small fish you can have loads, big fish not many...

you could possibly get some mollies, maybe guppies depending you have loads of hiding places, maybe a male betta, a pair of rams? a pair of gourami's... school of zebra danios, leopard danios, assorted danios, neon tetra's, cardinal tetra's penguins, rummy nose tetra's glowlight tetra's black heart tetra's...

basically if you want an impressive shoaling fish, then look at some tetra's of all different colours...

are you new to fish keeping?

a shoal of cory would be good, but they require sand substrate as they are delicate, how about a shoal of harliquin rasbora? very peaceful fish and at a splash of colour and life to a tank

The general rule of thumb for fishtanks is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. Just remember to look at the fish's adult size and not the size when purchased. I wouldn't overload with livebearers. If you want more I would get either mollies or guppies but not both as they can crossbreed with each other. Corydoras catfish are fun especially if you get 4 or more and do a great job at clean up. Otocinclus will help with algae and stay small. They are a great background fish. I also personally like snails but you don't have to get them.
Rasboras are peaceful school fish. If you go with any of the bigger tetras, they can be nippy (esp. red serpae tetras) and would definately go after fry. Neons are beautiful but sometimes can be hard to keep as they are sensitive to water changes, rummynose are pretty, I also love my diamond tetras. The diamonds aren't supercolorful but they sparkle when they swim. THe rams would be good too because they stay in the bottom sections of the tank and would leave the swordtails alone.
Swordtails would swim in the top, could add a couple of gourami's
tetras in the middle
rams in the mid to bottom
cory cats in the bottom
otocinclus everywhere :) ther go where the algae is.

Hi and thankyou for your replies. I got 6 ghost shrimp the other day and added them. I am going to make a list of all your suggestions and take it to the LFS with me when I get to go back there (prob Tues). I have never seen Rasboras at my LFS. But I will ask the lady about them. I also need more plants. What kind of those do you all suggest? I want to get my tank planted enough to let my FRY out of the breeder net and them have a place to hide. MY son cracked the 5 gallon tank I had them in so I had to out them in the net. I am down to 9 fry, a few died before I found the crack.

Thank You again

Hi thank you for the link. I will look at it in a few. Today I went to the LFS and got 2 more pineapple swordtails a pleco and 2 Bala Sharks. The only live plants that they had were banana plants. I think I have enough fish now as the 2 swordtails I got today are pregnant and with my other fry. So now I am going to look for more plants.

Thank You again

I would generally recommend half a dozen for Corydoras. From my experience that difference seems to make them school better. As far as plants go, check out Plant Geek. Probably your easiest plants are going to be Java Moss and Java Fern. You won't have to change lighting or dose fertilizers.

The Bala Sharks are a bad idea. They will get more aggressive with age. See if you can return them.

instead of bala sharks you could get a trio of gouramis? or a pair. of are you looking for colourfulness? or dont you mind about the colour?

Hi and thank you again for your responses and the links. I cant return my sharks. About 2 weeks ago I bought 2 black tetras and they attacked and killed one of my swordtails, So I called my LFS to see if I can swap the Tetras for more swordtails. The lady gave me a big attitude and said Its not her responsibility, And I needed to read the signs on the tanks before I bought the fish and all that. I told her that the sign on the tank said community. She tried telling me that it didnt. She finally said i could bring them back and she'll swap them just this once. Well I guess that I really made her mad when I got there because I made sure to point out that the tank WAS labeled community. So I proved her wrong. Now all of a sudden There is a big sign hanging up that says "No refunds, exchanges of any kind."

If the sharks start getting aggressive I will give them to one of my friends who has a tank full of just sharks.

Thank You Again
