What do you name yours?

I was just noticing, looking around the forum, at the names people give their fish. Why did you name your fish such, and what's the most unusual name you've given a fish and why?

I'll start... I had the (not so bright) idea to name all the fish with "f" names. So there's Fred and Ferdinand (both bettas), Fran and (R.I.P.) Finn and Phil (cory cats), but then that got too confusing... so now the newbies are Mr. Plec, Mr. USD (oh, so original, I know...), Bubba, Viz, Spot (cory cats), Bonnie and Clyde (angels), JD (betta) and a yet unnamed newbie betta...

How do you name? Or do you?

I love giving things strange names. I'm obsessed with 'native' names, like African or native american names, so a lot of things gets named stuff like that. I also enjoy making up strange words that sound pretty enough to be names.
So far there's:

Common pleco: Hurcimer. He was already named that when he was given to me.
Black tetras: Bonzai and Sllor. Bonzai was named after the hyena on the Lion King. One day I wrote the word 'rolls' backwards and thought it looked really kool, so I named something that.
Tiger pleco: Jethro. Named after Jethro Tull.
Leopard cory: Sedona. I have always loved that name, plus I have a thing for Arizona.
One of my khulis: Kinky. He has a very deformed spine and his body is kinked. It's SO funny to watch him swim

All other fish are unnamed.

lol the fun part about keeping, IMHO, is naming them

I named mine from The X-files but they died. Mulder, my first fantail goldfish, died the last. But now, My fish had a liquer theme going lol. And then my other three have odd names. Right now here are a list of the names

Most of our fish's names are based on puns or tenuous links to their species name or appearance.

Examples:

• Martha (Fahaka Pufferfish- I'm not explaining this pun!)
• Stewart (Common pleco- because he's Martha's tankmate)
• Broccolli (Huge Starlight Bristlenose - because his bristles look like broccolli and when we bought him we took him home in a polybox that had previously contained broccolli
• Achillies (Fire eel - a pun on "Achillies Heel")
• Snicket (Lemon Spotted green Plec - Named after Lemony Snicket, the author of the series of unfortunate events books.)
• Smaug (Dragon Puffer- Smaug is a Dragon from Tolkien's The Hobbit)
• Archie (Target Puffer- Archie is a pun on 'archery'..which has targets)
• Jif (Royal Panaque- I think 'panaque' sounds a little like 'pan cake' and In Britain, pancakes are most often serves with sugar & lemon juice, The leading brand of lemon juice is 'Jif' - I told you some of them are tenuous!)
• Roy (Chubby Plec - named after Roy Chubby Brown, a non-funny British Comedian)
• Josie (Sultan Pleco- his scientific name is L. joselimie
• Sherman & Panzer (Armoured shrimps- They look like little tanks)
• Twiggy (farowella catfish- looks like a twig)
• Cookie (Our rescue fahaka puffer - he's one tough cookie)

Lucky (goldfish) - cos I won him at a fair
Stanley (goldfish) - Stanislavski - he looked quite a clever fishy!
Merlin - (common plec) Cos he hides in a cave
Penelope (gourami) - I bought her on my housemate Penelope's birthday
Coolio (whiptail catfish) - because he's cool!
Elvis, Snow white and the seven dwarfs (minnows) - they hang out in a clan.
Mills and Boons (mollies) - they are love children!
Bonnie and Clyde (flying foxes) - they look quite shady
Philip (collomesus puffer) - I got him with Elizabeth... they were regal looking!

... and the rest of the fishy names just 'came' to me. When I get a fish I don't name it immediately, and sometimes the name just pops into my head after a few days. ie... dennis, teflon, eric, heather, feather, pierre...

I just name my fish of people I know or characters that come to mind the large major of my fish don't have names but some basicly walked in the door with name tags

Four Bronze Cories named after my best friends Mark (boyfriend), Swan, Yeo, and Jeff (some of these are last names)
Jebus (if I went into the full story of how this fish and why this fish got named it might offend some viewers)
Bates that beta
Trogdor the dwarf puffer (if you know what trogdor is then you'll understand if you dont' shame on you)
and Raphy my other fish I usually just call by their species name.

Hmm, some of my fish are named well, others are sad...

Sharky - Silver Shark (I know, I know ) )

George - Betta (Sharky and George )

Dude - pleco (we originally had a wee bairn called little dude, but we lost him , and dude was much bigger when we got him, hence just dude)

Roobarb and Custard my two new Silver Sharks B) (from TV show)

Ubu - Rainbow Shark (Spin City was on the telly the night after we got him, and you know at the end: "Sit Ubu, Sit...Good dog". I decided I like the name...)

That's about it for names, the Pim Pictus' are often referred to as "mouths" for their eating performances

I thought about naming the neons but with 15 of them....

i have a theme going in my angel tank, the angel fish are, angel, spike, fred, gunn, wesley, & cordilia. and the rainbows in with them are buffy, zander, giles, willough, tara and anja. then the turquoise rainbow, lorne, is still in the 210. one of these days i will catch him and move him to the "angel" tank.

i still have one rainbow left, but his name is mystery because he just appeared in a cycleing tank after i put in plants . had to wait till he was big enough to tell what kind of fish he was. still not sure what kind of rainbow.

then the rest are just random names. there is scobie , my common pleco, pinky(gold severum) and the brain(green sev) frick and frack the blood parrots, rocky and bullwinckle the jurapari, elvis the blue gourami(blue suede shoes) and buddy the african butterfly.

in the same tank with mystery are merlin the betta and the three stooges(spotted cories). i have several otos all named squirt. a platie named preggers(she has been pregnant since the day i bought her)

then my bettas, skylar, bob(named after my boss), annette(rip) , mr. white(rip) , and my orange bettas from wuv are pyro and sparky(rip)

-my 2 original platies are named George and Thalia after my inlaws (cuz in the beginning they kept to opposite sides of the tank and never interacted just like in real life )

-the next three platies are Lucy, Lucy (can't tell them apart ) and Nicky (she had a nick in her tail when we got her)

-my male molly is Howard after my hubby's friend (he's big, black and umm.. likes the ladies )
-his harem is Sally, Pepper and Molly.. just cuz

-My plec's name is Wally (cuz it just suits him soo well )

-my angel is Goldy (let my 4 year old neice name her! think it's after a fish in the Franklin cartoon)

-and last but not least... there's 'the Possee' - my 10 cards

I don't name my fish, my mother named the first 4 fish we had ever in my/their 29 gallon and all four of them died, since then only other ones named are the swordtails in the 29 gallon (named before the other 4 died) Martha's (two velvet female swords) and (frank (well fraunc? frank with a french accent) our red wag male sword who looks like he has a "french" moustache) but no more have been named as I think you get attached to things when you name them, and this is proven after my mother is like "poor scooter, sneaker, slinky, and 'the other one'" and mooped around about them dying, but the panda cories that were unnamed that died no one even hardly remembers as they had a 7 day guarantee and died before then so they were replaced. A friend of mine decided to name my 5 gold barbs in my 20 gallon once when she came over but I don't even remember what she named them anymore, nor could I tell you which was which one if I did remember.

i've named my mollies in the past. there was big mama, my biggest molly, outlaw (a male with a white body and a black patch on the top half of his sides that looked like a saddle). and i had a betta named dante, he was all red. i haven't had a chance to give names to any of my new bettas. my killis still remain nameless as well too. and the restof my fish are groups, so i just refer to them as groups. the bn plec is just "suckerfish".

I don't realy name my fish - I wait until a name crops up for one of them and then that name sticks but most of my fish have not yet aquired names. Also, if a fish dies, I name it so I don't forget it.

The named fish I currently have are:

'The Terrible Two' - Stripe and Spot the longfin zebra danios
Pearl - zebra danio girl that was given to me as a gift
Karrot (don't know how you spell that - as in the measuremeant for gold) - male longfin zebra danio
Kitty and Lamb - bronze cories, female and male
Panda-Leaf and Retrospect - corydoras leukomelas male and female
Pirate - young female pearl gourami
'The Platy Sisters' - Minibyte and Peppered Orange
and, last but never least, Sibilance the swordtail

demento - the blue gourami with a big dent in his head

the 3 muskateers - 3 peppered cories
the cult - 7 neons and 2 harlequin rasbora's that think they r neons

6 Neons - The Light Bright Crew - ...i think you could figure that out
3 Phantoms - Opera brothers - Phantom.....opera......phantom opera
3 Harliquns - Screwballs - They run into the glass randomly like crazed weasels on crack
My silver and gold goldfish - Silver and Gold - Its a holiday song from that clay animation christmas movie
Betta - Hangover - His tail and his upper fin over lap
the rest of my bettas are unnamed
The rest of my other fish are unnamed too or unapropriot to say here
