right now im feeding my malawi's a mixture of tetra cichlid crisps and hbh super soft spirulina, they eat this fine, but i would like to give them alittle more variety. im interested in hearing what everyone else uses. my tank has yellow labs, acei, peacocks, a common pleco, and synodontis long.

I feed mine, tetra pro flakes with spirulina, algae wafers, cucumber, courgette (zuchini), potatoe (seem to like it, so does the pleco), brine shrimp (once or twice a week), they eat the catfish pellets as well (although not meant for them :grr:  ), spirulina cichlid sticks, hikari floating cichlid pellets.

think thats it.....most of what I give them is probably much and such the same, so I dunno if its that varied, apart from the the veg.

I currently feed, hikari cichlid pellets (white packet), tetra veggie flakes, malawi spirulina flakes, cucumber once a week, tho they're not keen on lettuce/spinach/peas, shrimp or daphnia once a week. Two feedings per day, except on cucumber day. Also, one fast day a week.

potatoe (seem to like it, so does the pleco)

Potatoe ?? never thought of that. they like it then ? what do you do, boil them ?

yeah I thought I would try it, I just boiled for a wee while to soften it slightly. Par boil or something lol, (not up on my cooking lingo lol).

they nibble away at it, you know what they are like, they eat anything.

thats a good diet, i reccomend feeding cucumber or zuchini mbuna love it, and spirulina enriched brine shrimp once or twice a week

I try to do zucchini ones in a while, but I don't like it so I don't keep it in my house. I feed mine algae waffers and algae flakes. They too eat the catfish pellets.

I like to mix foods, so I have two tupperware containers that I rotate feedings on. So once a day they get a mix of spirulina flakes, HBH African Cichlid Attack granules, and Cyclopeeze granules (mostly for the labs, but they all eat it) and then the other feeding they get a mix of two types of African Cichlid pellets. Occasionally I throw in some veggie of some sort, but I've been too busy lately to do much of that.

I use a blended mix of shrimp, spirulina, spinach and peas all held together with gelatine.

Ive read of a very simular recipe like yours before being highly nutritious for them. Though ive never tried it myself before, i would like too. What exactly is gelatine ? and were do you get it from ? Do you use spiruline powder ? and do you freeze it after its made ?

little hijack

but is it ok to feed live brine shrimp and live daphnia? its just i feed my other fish them but havent tried the mbuna as wernt sure on it.

however i mainly feed cichlid pellet for hikari (sp) i feed cucumber once a week peas twice a week. when my mum gets grapes i brake them into quaters (after ive peeled the skin) they seem to love it.

I read before, its ok to feed live food once in a while as they like to chase it & helps develop their natural instinct or something... but i read that somewere on the net (not a forum), so who knows if its true or not ??? ive never tried though.

Its ok, ive found the answers to my questions.

Occasional feeding of brine shrimp and daphnia is OK but definitely not on a regular basis - too much protein to feed as the staple diet - remember most Mbuna species are Herbivores. I treat mine to Spirulina enriched brine shrimp once or twice a week. :good:

Live food for the vast majority of Mbuna is algae so not much chasing required (sorry darrel - couldn't resist :p )
