Im talking about the basic plastic bowls that you used to see for sale all of the time in petshops with a bit of coloured gravel at the bottom, one plastic plant, and a miserable looking goldfish in it.

They didnt have filters, or air pumps or anything along them lines, and were obviously cheap and ended up being bought for peoples children, because they were seen as an easy pet to keep.

What do you all think about the above?

Do you think its cruel keeping fish like that? Do you think that its ok for a little while?

Im not talking about the Bio orbs (or whatever they are called)

Can you tell that im bored??!!
:look:

I would love to see goldfish bowls banned from sale anywhere.

What do you mean by used to see? They are still sold, unfortunality. Most of them (depending on the size) are ok for bettas, but thats the only thing I would put in one. And people STILL believe that its ok to shove a goldfish in a bowl, and think what a great pet for their kids...

I don't even think its ok just for a little while (enless your taking the goldfish out of its proper tank so you can clean their tank). Goldfish need oxygen, they are not bettas. They NEED filters.

Are they really still on sale!!! I havent seen them for a while.....

I hate the things. I think they are cruel and shouldnt be on sale. I hate seeing fish in them.

I think goldfish bowls are bad and i don't like them because;
a. They send out the wrong image of fish keeping, and that is that it is easy and can be done by a 5yr old and is cheap.
b. The bowls themselves are cruel, they do not offer the appropriate living conditions required for any goldfish out there- many goldfish can live for 30yrs+ and grow to a foot long.
c. They are butt ugly, total eyesores unless a plastic tub with multicolored gravel and a fake plant that doesn't look like anything you'd find in any respectable aquarium is your thing. One of the fun/pleasing things about fish keeping should be decorating your tank, but with those bowls setups though, well... :|

I even think keeping Bettas in goldfish bowls is cruel.

I agree.

I used to work in a petshop that sold goldfish, koi and golden orfe for ponds. We were always having people walking in asking for goldfish for their children (i would refuse sale most of the time).

People seem to think fishkeeping is easy, which it isnt. I wish people would really realise what fishkeeping is really about.

Goldfish bowls are avaiable in most animal shops such as pets at home, some large self ran LFS who care about fish wouldnt often sell them, but maybe a small FS would sell them to make a few extra £'s.
Its just so tempting 'Goldfish starter kit, includes all you will need to set up your goldfish tank' (image with 3 goldfish in one bowl) :|, can't blame people, its so tempting as it seems so easy to unsuspective buyers.
Caring pet shops should educated people, and the manufacture's of these items should state clearly in huge letters "THIS IS CRAP, FALSE ADVERTISING" (obviously they wont though.

ban goldfish bowls and also ban them ugly biorbs and biurbs
Well, to tell you the truth, I haven't seen a goldfish in a bowl forever.
I dont think they sell plastic ones at my wal*mart, but they do sell glass ones that look 5x better and I buy them for bettas...
I also like the bio orbs. There's a 5G one that looks really cool, and would be good for a betta on display.
I dunno how you'd do a water change, but I'm assuming you do it the same way you put the fish in.
I wouldn't jump on Bio Orbs...

I even think keeping Bettas in goldfish bowls is cruel.
Yah, I see your point. Some people think putting bettas in unheated, unfiltered bowls is cruel, but if the room is warm enough then a betta in a 2 gallon goldfish bowl would be fine IMO. But I guess not everybody agrees with that.

In fishkeeping, no body every agrees on certian things.
Like minamal water for a betta.
1/2G
1G
2.5G?

Its one of those things where, you can't get everyone to have your opinion.
You have to trust your best judgment.
