Hi,

I was in a local pet shop today buying a heater for a new tank I'm setting up. I had a look at their betta's, they always look poorly. There's no heater in the tank and the temp was less than 10 degrees, the fish were either struggling to swim or lying on the bottom of the tank. I spoke to one of the assistants and voiced my concerns, she agreed with me and asked me if the type of heater I was buying would be suitable for the fish, I said YES! I would have taken the lot but I've never kept betta's and I don't really have the room, without having to buy more equipment, I'm about to have my 3rd tank up and running as it is. Although.......no, forget it, I can't have sick fish in my main tank. My hospital tank is too small, there's about 6 fish in the pet shop tank, although only 3 females looked as though they were still alive.

Anyway, what can I do? I'm going to phone the shop now and see if they've put a heater in, then I'm going to go in on Mon and see if the fish look any better. If they don't co-operate what do I do?

Thansk for reading.

Update - I just phoned them and they said they've put a heater in, so some good news. I'll go in again on Monday to check on them.

Well done you. Do rspca actualy take any notice if you told them? How about the people that the shop has to get it's licence from? I just looked to see where you were,, too far to come on a rescue mission lol

well done...I go in the local fish shops just to keep an eye on the fish and I tell them if there is anything wrong. Like a male in with the girls....must have jumped in! or one had tanks with white spot and they said they would treat it I went in 2 days later and all the tanks were blue so they were. You just have to make sure they know you are keeping an eye and moan to the Manager if they dont look after the fish :good: :good:

yay for a voice of the pet store bettas! that's awesome that they listened :)

i was in a pet store today... and it's the first time that i've seen this, but they had some of their betta's in 2 gallon tanks... i was quite impressed... lucky halfmoons! :) their regular VT's werent so lucky... they looked terrible... if i had the money i'd save them all... but sadly i didnt :( altho that's the first time i'd ever really seen a fish store sell halfmoons :) oh they were gorgeous!
