I live in Maine, USA. We have pretty bad winters up here, so my power goes out a lot. What should I do with fish during one? Should I relocate them to in front of the fire? Or, what?
Thanks!

This is concerning for times it goes out and you're not there...

How long does it go out for, on average?

If you're in rural Maine I'd invest in a backup generator. Otherwise I'd think about a different hobby, if the power goes out "a lot."

Or just keep non-tropical fish.

I live on the coast. By a lot, I mean like, at most 5 times a winter, and at most, like, a few hours to two days.

Get some lagging for your tanks, and nice heavy blanket, a few hot water bottles and some battery powered small air pump to keep media alive. That should see you through 2 days or so :good:

yeah they should be fine, main thing is to keep them warm and to periodically run tank water through the filter media to keep it from starving. Nothing of much needs to be done until you hit like 8 hours with no power, unless you know its gonna be a long outage(like a blizzard). If you still have running water it should be pretty easy. If you are on a well though things are a bit harder since its not like you can flush the toilet much less do a water change, when the well pump has no power
