The best color, the best spread out fins, the widest gill flare? And for the color, do females of one color only like males of the same color?

A big ....................bank account

No.....that's what I looked for :p

Seriously though. We have spawned different colours and different tail types and had no problem. Some think that a female will check out the nest and if not happy they won't go under the nest until he's made it bigger and better. Then again we've had males that have made the tiniest nests but have still spawned.

One of the main things is that both be conditioned really well. If the female isn't properly conditioned then she wont be receptive to the males advances which usually leads to her being beaten up more.

Sorry to jump in with another question keith! Is conditioning purely feeding live/frozen foods twice daily and daily water changes to keep them in perfect condition?

Cheers :D

When we condition we feed live bloodworm 3 times a day....pretty much as much as they want and gradually raise the temp to around 29/30c. It takes a week to two weeks to properly condition. Obviously the longer the better.

The female we are using now is in a divided tank with a male on the other side which I think does help. You can see by her belly how big she got in my spawning pics.

The male needs it too because he will spend up to 4 or 5 days with no food and the lights on 24hrs a day to look after the babies.

dont you use indian almond leaves too?

Yes we always have IAL in the spawning tank. It also helps to keep the bubblenest together as well as acting as a tonic.
