Hi ,just researching at moment, man at lfs said that betta pellets just make them fat,and it`s best to feed them flaked food , also when i asked how long they lived for he replied only 12 months,is this true ?
Also what`s the best brand to buy as pets at home didn`t stock them?

2.5-3.5 years is usual lifespan from birth; I have seen them live to 5 years before, but rarely.

I used to feed mine all the usual foods which the rest of the fish gets (pellets, flakes, frozen, etc), I recommend a varied diet for all fish, just match it to their requirements. For example, Bettas are omnivores, so their diet much contain meaty foods and veggie foods (they can get constipated without those).

Thank Kitty Kat, what sort of meaty and veggy foods, and what do you think about betta pellets?

I have never used "Betta pellets", I suspect they're no different from the average omnivore or carnivore pellets, you just get charged double for them. I used omnivore flakes, omnivore and cichlid pellets, boiled and deshelled peas.. that sort of stuff. I usually feed about 5-10 different dry foods (mostly, I keep getting free samples, it seems to take forever to get through the things!).

Oh, and the frozen foods are standard tropical quintet/quartet, cut into appropriately sized cubes and defrosted.

I use Pro Betta pellets, flake and either live or frozen foods as a treat like bloodworms. The Betta pro pellets have really improved my bettas condition and colour so much so that people have commented on the difference.

You give blanched deshelled peas once a week to clear them out. Just normal frozen peas.
