Hello all, I'm just about empty on my dechlorinator. I am currently using "Seachem Prime" Which on the bottle claims to Remove Chlorine, Chloramine, Ammonia - Detoxifies Nitrite & Nitrate and Provides a slime coat. I'm not 100% sure but I think for 100Ml it cost me about £7. The ratio is 5ml to every 200L of water, though I usually put in 1ml for every 10L of water I use.

I have recently found a 500ml bottle of this Seachem Prime on ebay for around £12, which doesn't seem a bad price.

Previously I had used Tetratec Aquasafe as it was easy to measure out, but obviously you get less value for money.

What declorinator do you guys use for water changes?

Thankyou,

Tim.

EDIT: Also while I'm here I will ask if anybody can reccomend a quiet air pump, I'm currently using a Tetratec APS50 air pump, however this isn't powerful enough for my tank. I was thinking about getting the APS150 but wondered if there were any better ones out there.

If you're going to put 1ml in per 10ml then there is no point you having seachem prime (which is more expensive per ml). It's a great conditioner but one of the main reasons it's recommended is cause it's so concentrated. A bottle will cost more than others per ml but will last much much longer.

If I wasn't using seachem prime I'd probably go back to API Tap water conditioner.

i use seachem prime too , its great especilly as i have to do so menay waterchanges , it gos so much further than the api stress coat i used to use ( which is still a good dechlor) , they also do a powdered version called seachem safe which gos even further still.

I tried to use less when I first bought it, however I don't have anything suitable enough to measure a smaller amount. I only do 10L buckets of water at a time as I when I use a 20L bucket I spill it everywhere as its so heavy .

Next time you're passing a chemist or in boots ask where the syringes are. I'm sure you'll be able to find something small enough... I ermm... borrowed some plastic pipettes from uni. In my defence they were going to be disposed of with hazardous waste (even though all we'd measured out was some bacteria).
So I took a few.

Maths was never my strong point lol. How much dechlorinator do you usually use per 10L?

to make your waterchanges easier get a long length of garden hose run it straight to the sink/drain and syphon your water out , then just connect hose to the tap and re-fill straight to the tank. add the dechlorinator to the tank when it is re-filling . doing it this way tho you add enough dechlor for the whole tank volume not what you have taken out. hence why seachem prime is worth its weight in gold.

I use just over .25ml per 10l My pippette doesn't have markings as low as 0.25ml so I guesstimate and put in somwhere between 0.25ml and 0.5ml

I use Seachem Prime as well. I picked up a 1ml syringe from my local pharmacy for 15p! It has markings for every 0.1ml so I can accurately dose 0.25ml for every 10l bucket. But I usually overdose slightly using 0.3ml per 10l.

I use Seachem Safe same as prime but in a powdered version, much better value in the end :good:

I use Markandhisfish's method.. Just take out and put back water with my hose and add stress coat! No suggestions on the air pump though. Sorry, but I'll be keepin' an eye out for all your suggestions as I would like to know as well!

I used to do the same thing - 10L buckets and used Stress Coat to dechlor. Eventually I got sick of paying about £8 a bottle and having it only last me a month - 6 weeks, so I bought a bottle of Prime off ebay - the one you're talking about for £12. That was last September. I still have it! Although I probably will have to buy another one in the next 6 months or so. I also changed to using a hose for my water changes - put a hose connector on the end of my gravel vac tubing so I can connect it directly to the hose and use the tank water to water my garden, then take the other end and connect to the tap and refill. And I put about 2 capfuls of prime in which is about 1.5x for the whole 240L tank. It's worth it - trust me!

I've used Seachem prime too that's prob the best also used JBL Biotopol another good one (has a handy measuring lid) but I am now using waterlife poolshield a little bit goes a long way with pond dechlorinators and it's a bit cheaper than prime, I measure mine out with a 2ml syringe around 0.2ml per 20 litres got them from ebay, oh and I do water changes with 20l buckets and yes I do spill it quite often
