im setting up a new 125G and will be moving my balas into it, the largest is maybe 7".

i know that cichlids are aggressive, but have heard of some people keeping them with large balas.

what do you reccomend?

Depending on the species of cichlids, most cichlids are too agessive, and if they aren't agresseve they usually still attack if they have their own territories... Best bet IMO is no, this is because bala sharks are quiet skiddish fish (IME) and alot of cichlids are pretty active... Also, even if you were to put cichlids like discus and angelfish in, those types of cichlids are calm and relax... but the balas may be too quick moving and may irritate these fish to death :(

I'd say no, but that's just my opinion...

IMHO
suitable tank mates for bala/silver sharks are
tinfoil barbs
hampala barbs
mad barbs
apollo sharks
pretty much any bottom dweller (there are of course exceptions)
and adult ABFs

having said that
125G is not really big enough for a school of adult balas, especially when they surpass 8"

maybe if you get some german rams or bolivian rams, they're pretty dosile cichilds. they mainly only fight with each other, if you can call a staring contest a fight  other than that, i'd say no to other cichilds.
