I believe SDs are like lawn-mowers to live plants.
I believe it too , no .....I've witnessed decimation of plants by silver dollars , more like lumber jacks , and swimming round the tank with stalks in their mouths
There are other types of dwarf or smaller medium sized cichlids out there as well , Keyholes were mentioned , festivum , curviceps , nannacara for example .
Also there are some west African river cichlids that could work for you , They behave similarly to many new worlds , and can share the tank with some new worlds as well , these being the krib species Plevicachromis and Anolmalochromis thomosi .
I my experience with convicts , they loved to dig , or move the substrate into piles , or just move it where they saw fit , even at 1 1/2 " , never tried them with plants for that reason .They are worth keeping though
