What Cichlids Are Suitable For A Community Tank

HI

What Cichlids are suitable for a community tank? I know angels are ok in an community tank, just wondered if any others are ok. Are they aggressive and hard fish too look after?

Do they need any special care?

Rams (German blues and Bolivians), some of the apistogramma species, and kribensis are all cichlids that can go into community tanks.

German blue rams are notoriously sensitive to water parameters, so they can be a little difficult, but Bolivian rams are nice and hardy.

From what I've heard and read, apistos and kribs are relatively easy to care for, however kribs should be kept in a tank with fish that they can't eat (aka-no small fish like neons), as they get territorial if you have a pair and they decide to breed. Rams get territorial during breeding as well, but not nearly as bad as kribs.

Kribs, Rams and Apistos are the 3 main best community cichlids IMO. Keyholes and Rainbow cichlids are also good.

Angels are only suitable for certain tankmates. It is easy to forget that those tiddlers in the shop will grow into reasonable sized fish in the right conditions (18"+ of actual water, ideally in a 4-foot plus tank), easily capable of eating "torpedo-shaped" fish <6cm, just like Neon Tetras as they do in the wild.

Depending on the size of your tank, Rainbow cichlids are pretty peaceful, also Ellioti's are ok i kept them in a community tank without any issues, just one thing to remember like most fish if they can fit something into their mouths they will

Reccommend keyholes in particular, crazily peaceful for a cichlid, but one point to remember, ALL cichleds get territorial when breeding (and so can interact very badly with ,nosey' fish like loaches, catcfish etc. at these times.

It depends on what commumity fish you are thinking of and the size of your tank. Severums are pretty docile for a cichlid, but you cant put them with fish small enough to fit in their mouth (neons etc). There are some lovely Thorichthys most popular being the meeki (firemouth) and Elliotti. Geophagus are another peaceful group, loads to choose from there, but most need a big tank. Smaller cichlids, common ones, rams (blue & bolivian), kribs, not so common are small acara (Krobia). Keyholes & festivums also remain fairly small.
