This fish belongs to a friend of mine, he's had it for quite some time now but has been unable to identify it. Hoping someone on here can help.

Image not coming up on my PC. maybe the same for others?

PS forget that, I can see it now. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

I think you'd be better off posting this in the South American (New World) Cichlid section. Looks a like like a Jack Dempsey to me, but I really know very little about Cichlids.

I thought of posting in a Cichlid forum but wasn't sure what one to post in, and I didn't want to post in all of them and get accused of spamming, some forums can be realy strict when it comes to posting more than once about the same thing.

It looks like some type of talapia. I'm not sure i will keep looking. Welcome to TFF!
:D

From the pic it looks like it's a bit hollow bellied. Feed it something like frozen foods or live earthworms to get it to fill out more.
Sorry if I sound a bit forward.

generally speaking, just pick one of the cichlid forums and hope you got it right. if you didn't, juan or someone else with a wide range of expertise will quickly notice and the thread will be relocated to the appropriate place

i'd disagree on the jack dempsey; i don't think JDs are that light. the markings are reminiscent of flowerhorns to me, but the shape looks all wrong :dunno: i'd say it's definitely a NW Cichlid of some sort.

--EDIT--
er, inverted the light/dark antonym pair. d'oh!

At a first glance I thought, flowerhorn. Not a JD because the color is all wrong. Juvie Flowerhorns don't have the huge foreheads.

Thanks for the suggestions I'll check out the different types of fish people have suggested and see what I can find out.
