Hey,

I've just cycled my 15G hex and wanted to get some German Rams. Unfortunately, my ph is around 7.50 and I know Rams like a more acidic water.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what type of alkaline based cichlid I could get. Obviously they need to be small, like the rams and not grow large. They also need to be widely available as I notice some are rarer than others, and I'm in the UK.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated, as I really want a pair of cichlids but dont want to bufer my water as my tank is heavily planted!

Thanks

Hi :) ,

German blues should be fine for you.

It has been pointed out recently (cheers freddyk (again!)) that a lot of the fish we buy have been bred and raised in captivity anyway so are acclimated to lower pH conditions. Only wild raised and caught fish would suffer from highly adverse water conditions.

I have two German Blues in my tank, along with two bolivian rams and they are all doing great.

The Blues have even spawned a couple of times. Although the eggs didn't hatch I understand they need a few "mock" tests to get it right!!

hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick responce you have honestly made my day. I though this would be the case to be honest with you. I'll give it a go and keep my fingers crossed anyway!

Although what is the pH in your anyway?

If you dont mind me asking

I had rams before with that ph and they did great....you don't need to lower the ph just make sure it doesn't fluctuate....If your planning on breeding them though i suggest mixing tap water with RO water to soften it or else the eggs wont hatch.....
