Right now I have a very empty 40G tank, reading through the pinned topic, I shouldnt be able to keep anything. However, when reading through posts I hear different.

As said before, my tank is a 40G. Measurements are 80x40x50cm (lxwxh). I'd like to hear some options, seeing as I have absolutely no clue about cichlids yet. I'll do my research once I have some possibilities :)

Add: they do have to be able to get along with a common plec and a sailfin plec (both far from full size and to be moved into a 55 and a 75 later on)

That tank isn't too bad, you do have some mbuna options, but because of it's short lenght you should really stick to the basic 'small tank species' including Yellow labs, rusty's, Saulosi, Acei, and Aulonocara.

Then you have no lack of options from Tanganyika, but you're best doing some research to get an idea of what's available. WIth these you can go with rock dwellers, shelldwellers, and open water schoaling fish.

Any of these africans will be fine with your pleco's, though the pleco's will only last so long in this smaller tank.

Thanks! At least now I have some names I can do research on :D
Also, I know the plecs wont last long in this tank :) The 55G and the 75G are already set up, and they can be moved into there at any time. Its just that I'm letting them get a bit bigger before moving them over.
