i have a minibow 5 and it gets to hot (80 F). I need a chiller that can bring it down to about 70 F, it also needs to be small enough to fit beside the filter. so waht kind should i get?

the cheapest chiller i saw was like 200$, it was twice the size of ur tank, i dont think a chiller will work for u

I didn't understand why all the negativity, until I checked out what a minibow 5 was.

Um, uh, er, yeah. I don't think a chiller is the way to go. Hey, if you really want it, by all means go for it. But, I'd get the 90-gallon sump and powerheads for your aquarium before I got the chiller.

If you are getting one, this one seems to be a decent one. Keep in mind that it doesn't have a controller--you'll have to buy one separately.

 (NO, I'm not laughing at ya...I just tickle myself with my exaggerations).

Take care,

JT

IMO as long as the temperature is stable then 80 isnt too hot. If the temperature is really unacceptable look to add a sump.

IMO 70 degrees is too cold to be honest. 80 is an ok temperature if its stable. My 100 gallon runs at a stable 82 degres with no problems

If it really concerns you then i have seen small portable beer chillers used as a water cooler. you simply run a hose through it coiled up and back into the tank. a small power head will pump the water through the cooler and chill the water.

As i said though, your temperature really is not that high

im just trying to get it to that temp because thats what ive read white cheeked gobies need. It only seems to be the light bulb heating it up, maybe i could find one that doesnt heat it up so much

If its the light thats heating it... think about the temp when the lights are off...

The temp will drop rapidly with only 5gals. You WILL need a heater to keep the temp stable (and in 5 gallons its going to be very hard to keep stable)

Chillers INHO are way to overpriced and way to well useless. My tank was sitting at 32-37 here with the african summer. I looked into chillers and damb are they expensive, so i went down to my local second hand shop and bought a small window mounted aircon, Now my tank is stable at 26 and my rooms a nice 22 degrees, a hell of a lot better. The best of both worlds, me and my fishies sleep in peace now  And it cost a tenth of the price!!!

But i supoose it all depends on where your tank is. Just my 2 cents sorry

The thing is an aircon costs more to run.

In a 5 gallon tank I think it would be alot cheeper for you to get a 30 galon sump than it would be to get a chiller.

But all of the chillers that i lookied into, all were made up of modified air-cons with compressors and all, i understand that they have thermostats and they dont run 24/7 but when the room is cool it's alot easier to keep it cool than to cool it down, so 1 could set your air-con to run off a thermostat or timer, and so would not require much more energy for alot more gain. But for a 5 gallon the chiller would be turning on and off a hundered times a day as a tank that size will be easily affected by the ambient temp

and i assume for a 5 gallon which is round 20 literes (i think) that both the chiller and air-con will cost ten-fold that of the entire set up.

I been thinking about this, surely he could use a peltier. I've used them in the past for many a wonderfull thing. Wire up a thermostat of some sort, the problem would be where to mounth the peltier, I dunno how well glass would take to a peltier, but you could allways run pipes over it. And i'm sure a powerfull enough peltier could cool your tank easilly. The wiring may be a problem but if you need help or a diagram PM me. And i sem to remember them being priced at around $20 could be wrong, i dont live in the states, the power suplly might be about as much.
