well depends on the smell. A healthy cycled tank has a warm smell...like garden soil. But it isnt overpowering?

Sometimes a poorly maintained tank will start smelling like rotten eggs or sulfur because anerobic pockets have formed in the substrate.

Again, the root of any issue with a tank, IME anyway, is maintenance maintenance maintenance.

I've realised how bad my MTS has become now. When I go out in the fresh air for a few hours and then return home it smells slightly moist and peaty (Although I don't use peat).
I know the evil smells you mean Smurfy. It is a sign of a badly maintained tank sadly. Or some medications can wiff rather horribly (I think so anyway). I used to get the pockets in the substrate with my first sand based sustrate way back. I didn't know about the problems if I didn't disturb it every clean. :*) Thankfully that's well in the past and no one was effected by it at the time.
Hugs,
P.
