I went to a little craft sale at my church today, expecting to browse around and buy a few baked goods and picture frames for charity. I walk in, and I see a tank, probably about 20 gallons, full of brown water, and about 50 small comet goldfish. A sign hung off of it saying HOME GROWN GOLDFISH-FREE! And two kids holding nets and ziplock bags stood next to it. I walked over to the tank and instinctively began looking at all of them. They all looked relatively healthy, so that helped my temper a lot. The kids explained to me that their father bred them in his pond and didnt have the room for them. I saw kid after kid take ziplock baggies full of fish with them, then sat holding them all through the church service. They netted out the fish, dozens at a time, watched them flop, poked at them, dropped them back in, over and over. kids were bagging them themselves and stuffing the bags in their pockets to take home. It was terrible. I know that they have no decent set up for those animals. I tried talking to people about proper care of goldfish, how they are NOT bowlfish, etc. All I got was people asking me to please leave. At least I was able to tell them that they shouldn't fill the bags up ENTIRELY with water, because goldfish need air too. All through the service I sat and thought about those fish. My mother has strictly forbidden any more fish in this house. So, naturally, one of my friends saw how upset it made me, went over and bagged two up for me, and gave them to me 'as a gift.' Well, my mom can't be mad now. I had to go work at a horse farm right after church, so I set the bag in a bowl at my house and just let the top stay open so the fish had some air. Those little troopers sat in that bag for hours until I was able to come home and tend to them. I went to my basement and got a 10 gallon sterilite bin, filled it with some water, added in a bit extra stress coat, the gravel I had left from an old tank setup, and two plastic plants. I had an old filter, and new media and a new bio wheel which i set up and attatched to the side of the 'tank.' (modefyed slightly, took me at least an hour to get it set up, but I did it!) So at least they are in decent water for once. Just thought I would rant on a bit, I will keep you updated on their progress. I will also try and get some pictures set up.

edited to add, yes, I know that the tank they are in isn't cycled. In such short notice, there wasn't a lot I could do. All pet stores are closed sundays, and I hope to get them a decent tank as soon as possible, I already have enough money.

That must have been awful for you to watch. At least the ones you have got will be ok. I think the best thing would be to speak to the minister, he must surely care about God's creatures? Perhaps he could stop it happening again. Your two free fish are going to cost you a bit, aren't they? I can tell you don't mind about that. Best of luck with them anyway. :)

Not much more you could have realy done mate

Shocking stuff like this always happens though :-(

Hi OrkyBetta :)

Good for you! :flowers:  At least your two will have a happy home and a long life. :D

Don't worry about doing a cycle with fish. It's the way it's always been done and goldfish are tough little creatures. If you remember that a slow cycle is a safe cycle, and are prepared to do a lot of water changes before it's over, they will do just fine. :D

Thanks all, and great suggestions. You're probably right, these free, common goldfish are going to cost me a bundle, but hey, I have the money saved up anyways, and these guys deserve it. I will definitely keep you updated on their progress. The 'tank' they are in is probably like a 6 gallon container, with filtration that can handle up to 30 gallons. It is all I had on short notice, and I didn't want them to have no filter. So when I get a proper set up for them, I will be open for water changing schedules for sure.

p.s., took some pictures of the little guys. Turned the filter off for clarity. They look healthy, but I am worried because they are not eating, and seem to still be very nervous. I will give them a bit more time.

Thats was really nice of you to do that. Maybe you shouldve taken a stick and started poking the children to see how poking fish really feels. MUAHAHHAAHAHAHA. I've seen people win goldfish at the carnival plenty of times and it sickens me to know that they will be killed. Sometimes I try winning as much goldfish as I can to save them. Then I give them to friends as b-day presents but of course I give them to the friends that already have goldfish ponds or tanks. :D

Exactly, I was encouraging friends I knew that had ponds to take some. I don't know why, but I cannot aide any kind of animal cruelty, even if it is 'just a fish' like my mom always tells me. I treat my fish the same way I treat my horses, or my cats, dog, bird, anything. You don't have to spend a ton of money, or get scarily obsessed with the animal, just respect it.

Hi OrkyBetta :)

They are beautiful little fish, and look healthy to me.

I think they might just be stressed out from being changed from a pond to a small tank with different water parameters, and possibly a very different temperature. The ordeal they went through in between didn't help them either.

They will start eating once they settle down, but you might want to try tempting them with some live blackworms, tubifex worms, or even frozen bloodworms. Few fish can resist them and some good nutrition will do a lot to get them off to a good start. :D

You have a horsey :-( :-( :-( ... I always wanted a pony. Well then now that I know that you have a horsey, now im going to unleash my plans for taking it. Tommarow morning you will not see any horseys on your farm. Muhahahaha. Im going to barrow it for a second maybe by next month I'll give it back :shifty:

-Arrowhead :ninja: :D

They look lovely with the black fringing to the fins! Do they swim about normally? They are probably not eating because (as others have said) they are still a little stressed out. Inchworm's suggestion of bloodworms is excellent... they have a very strong smell which the fish find irresistable!
Keep us posted on how they get on and keep the piccies coming! ^_^

Thanks so much for your help and encouragement. I will thaw out some bloodworms tomorrow for them, and see what they make of them. I wonder if the water is all that's bugging them, I mean, they are probably in the cleanest water they've ever known. And they're inside too, that's a plus.

That's true... you mentioned that they had belonged to someone who didn't have enough room in his pond and that the tank water was really murky. Maybe they had been in a pond until now and that's why the water was cloudy and full of silt? Perhaps if you put a blanket over their tub they might feel more comfortable.

I tried feeding them bloodworms today. No luck. I ended up netting them all out before the filter completely destroyed them. I am starting to worry about these guys. Assuming they ate the day I bought them, they have been about 4 days without food. And I can't even say when they last ate for sure. They arwe incredibly scared and spend the majority of their time hiding in th small cluster of fake plants, cowering together. I have not seen them go to the top at all, only dart across the bottom if they feel threatened. (which is a lot of the time.) I am going to give them a few more days, then take some more drastic measures, whatever that may be.

All I can suggest is adding more fake plants, and maybe some floating plants like duckweed. Gives them cover, plus if they eat it, extra nutrition. Also try adding some FW live food, daphnia for instance, so if they don't eat it they'll live in the tank.

Oh, what a good idea, live food. Now my next question, where do youy find live food? I have yet to find a dealer.
