What About Livebearer Subforums?

If you check out the catfish section, they've gone and done this already. One subforum for Corydoras, one for plecs, and one for everything else.

Why split up the livebearer section?

The basic argument is this: Something like 90% of the questions here seem to be about breeding domesticated guppies, mollies, platies, or swordtails, and those questions are asked primarily by relatively inexperienced aquarists. Nothing wrong in that, by the way, quite the reverse. It's excellent that people ask questions, and even more excellent that other people freely offer good advice.

But, the downside is that it's difficult for those of us with an interest in less common livebearers -- Endlers, wild-caught poecilids, goodeids, halfbeaks, pike livebearers, etc. -- to keep up with those rare discussions that interest them. A topic on halfbeaks or goodeids will quickly be smothered by the dozens on guppy fry and breeding traps.

Any thoughts?

I think it'd be a good idea to have sub forums so that people with rarer livebearers can talk to people who also have them and it won't take ages of searching to find a thread on them.

I think this would be a good idea: it might encourage people with an interest in rare livebearers to spend more time on the forum. Now and then we have had posts about fish like goodeids and limias, but often not enough interested people seem to be reading them so the thread peters out.

Exactly, you've hit the nail on the head. If only one goodeid person stops by per day and replies, that thread quickly vanishes. Ditto halfbeaks, pikes, etc.

There are other livebearer groups (I belong to at least 2) but this forum does have a very nice atmosphere as well as some of the best moderators around. So I'd like to see rare livebearer people come by more often and join in. Moreover, we might even be able to encourage people who have only heard of "the big 4" livebearers to try their hands at something a bit more challenging.

Exactly.

I generally support this idea, however, my only issue is it probably wouldn't get much traffic. In the Catfish section, there were tons of posts for each sub-forum per day. Here, you see maybe one a week. I know you say you could get more people into it, etc. but I still would worry about the traffic. Let's see what everyone else says, and see how popular it seems. Perhaps we could work something out such as a trial period, and see what really happens.

Why should be split everything up into the little categories? I say leave it at rare Livebearers as a sub-forum, and that's it. I'm not one for filing everything away, and think of all the extra work I'd get moving posts from one category to another that were wrongly posted. Yaaaay!

i agree here because youed have three forums with alot less traffic

Okey dokey. But can we assume that the general feeling is that at least two subfora is a good idea, one for guppies etc. and one for the rare/wild stuff?

I know it's an artificial distinction, but I'd assume putting Endlers with the rare/wild stuff rather than the artificial varieties of guppies etc. would be best. Is it me, or are the people into Endlers also the people into rare livebearers as well?

I agree, too much work and there really is no need for it. I know what it would feel like with all the extra work. It would just be a thing for average people to get more confuzed with

I think it would be interesting to have a subforum on the rare breeds, we dont need a subforum just for breeding as the breeding livebearers topic is pinned along with some other interesting stuff! I might not keep rare livebearers but I would find it interesting to read peoples threads
