Well i was sitting at home enjoying a good christmas day, although i was also worried as my friend was getting me some live fish for me :/
I had asked for some dwarf gourami however about an hour ago i got a phone call from them saying "oh, they dont appear to have any dwarf gourami but i have my eye on these nice little fishes for you." I asked them what they were but she wouldn't give tell me all i got out of her was that they were all different coulers although they were the same speices and as far as she knows were part of the labryinth family.
Then she hung up. Sounds ok i thought.
Then a couple of minutes ago she turns up on my front door step with not one but TWO breeding pairs of fighting fish all in the SAME bag!!!!!! :S
Well i went mad on her (poor girl, she knew no different)
Ok so heres the situation at the moment:
i have separated the pairs however they are in small ice cream containers with no heater or filtration.
i have absolutly no way of making a small tank and i don't have a spare one forr them to go in they definatly can't go in any of my tanks in operation either.
and i can't even take them back to the shop as it is twenty miles away and it's christmas day and i'm not alowed to drive as i've already taken over the legal amount of alchol units and my wife has no licence.
My friend has bought them in a sale and the shop closes in TWO days time.
WHAT DO I DO!!????     :S

How about creating some sort of seperator in the tank or attaching a container inside the tank at the top & puncture it with several holes to allow the water to circulate in & around the tank. This should keep them going until you figure what else to do.

Fighting fish, as in bettas?

And closes? you mean as close as in never opening again?

If they're bettas try and find seperate one gallon containers, if not bigger (they're perfectly fine living in a one gallon though) and they'll be fine with no heater, no decor or filter as long as their water isn't too cold and it's dechlorinated. As for food if you've got some blood worms, meal worms, brine shrimp or anything else that size around they'll eat those for the time being. If you're planning on keeping them you should go read the FAQ in the betta section, if you're not going to keep them you could try and find a new owner for them, or try and give them to another pet store.

as best to my knolodge yes

yes

I like the idea of separating a tank- my gouramis won't mind having a couple of gallons taken out of thier 80 gallon tank.
ant then i think i might take them back to the shop tommorow.
howevr im a bit worried that this idea with the separation might disturb my gourami and thier ammonia/nitrate levels but it will have to do for now :/

Hi tetrafan,

First I suggest you apologize to your friend for being such an ingrate. :grr: Since it's Christmas and she meant to make you happy, your reaction was totally uncalled for. Surely you must know better than to ask someone who knows nothing about fish to buy some for you. A gift certificate would have been much more appropriate.

Since they are bettas, one of the most adaptable of all fish, I'm sure you can find some containers to keep them in until the stores open tomorrow and you can get them more suitable permanent quarters. They will be better off, until then, in pots, jars, mixing bowls, etc., then they ever would have been if they stayed in that store.

In the spirit of the season, why not look on the bright side of this. You have a friend who cares about you and you have probably saved the lives of some lovely fish.

Merry Christmas! :santa:

maybe i was a little harsh but i couldn't hold it in, my only thoughts at that time were about 4 little fishes inoccent lives. I didn't ask her to buy me fish anyway she just rang in the morning and i was a little tired.
i will make it up with her.
I didn't know it would be safe to put bettas in small containers but i guess you can so i will.
thanks.

Oh yes and Merry Christmas Inchworm!!!

Quick way of doing this is to jar them or put them in some other sort of container and float them in the tank, as long as they have a lid which you've punched holes into (so they can't jump out of the container) and they are in clean water that is floating in warm water you should be OK.

You then don't need to disturb your gourami's too much and the betta's are in a secure warm and clean environment until you decide what you want to do with them.

If you don't mind not being able to see in well, appropriately-sized tupperware makes a great cheap betta home

Anyway... since the store they came from is going out of business I doubt you'd be able to return them anyway, but you might be able to give them to another shop if you don't want to keep them. That said, I hope you'll consider keeping at least one... they're great little fish ;)

well all this is mind i have just taken the fish back to the shop who promptly exchanged them for 5 dwarf gourami AND 4 honey gourami :D
i love triple half price sales

Hi tetrafan :)

As the old saying goes, "All's well that ends well!" :D  :D
