well i just got a new 55 gallon tank. and i have all my filters and heaters. but the only problem that i have is putting the water into the tank. i have well water! is that going to make a difference. some people say that is will and some people say it wont? i mean i really dont want to go to the store and buy 55 gallons of water but if i have to i will. but will well water be ok. are there chemicals that will help? or i dont even need chemicals. thanks again

I'd check he pH, Kh, GH, nitrate, and phosphate. It should be fine though. You obviously don't have chlorine to worry about and hopefully no funny heavy metals as you're drinking it too .

yeah i dont think that i have to worry about any heavey metals. but on the inside of the house we have a water softener system. which is basically salt. so that would be bad right. i should use the out side water were the water softener isnt hooked up to? or it doesnt matter?

a bit odd to be using salt as a water softener.

anyway, id use the outside water and buy one of the commercially available water softeners available for fish tanks. but id only do this after checking the levels previously mentioned. Once you know the levels, research the type of fish you can keep with those stats because it would be a pain to become dependent on using a water softener etc every water change. at least dechlorinators are cheap.

I have well water too and a water softener that uses salt. I just use the water from the faucet and haven't had any problems with it.

Also i don't know how your well and water softener r hooked up but if you want u can do water test before and after your water goes though the softener and see if it makes a diffrence.

Hi. Water softeners regularly use salt. They exchange sodium ions for the metallic ions that aren't desired. Anyway, I have tap water also. Our softener isn't working right now so i've been using regular tap water. The water is very hard so i mix tap with reverse osmosis 50/50 to bring the hardness down some. Everything's been working well, the hardness is down to a reasonable level and the fish are happy.

Your best bet might be to talk to someone at your lfs (local fish store) and find out from them what fishkeepers in your area are doing. Even better, try to find out if there is an aquarium society in your town or county. The members will be experienced fishkeepers, and many of them probably have wells too. Your society might even have a website where you can post your questions.

BTW, if you click on the link in the email we sent you, you will validate your membership and be able to post everywhere on this forum. :D

Well I use wellwater and its not bad but everyones well water will be different so check all its levels and get a water conditioner. You could also buy a a RO unit.
