What a day.

It started off reasonably, cleared a rather thick layer of snow off the car and set off the Morrisons to go raid the cash machine as I was going to take the misses off to pick up her nice new pilates machine thing from a little town called Nelson (some were west of Bradford).  Using the wonders of a satnav in most snowy single track roads mode!!

Got there (just) picked up said pilates machine, that's misses happy.  So I though seeing as we're passing by Leeds to go home we might as well take a look at Maidenhead aquatics in Leeds, just looking for inspiration for mine and the misses new tanks which we should be setting up soon, when we move to the new apartment!
We both had a really good chat with the staff there about our new tanks, but then I went for a wonder and found some thing I didn't realize I needed.  But there they were, Blackberry shrimp.

So there they were being fished out of the tank and the credit card going swipe!! 3 little Blackberry shrimp coming home.  Then home plopped the bag in the little nano tank as we do and wait.  Then it was time to release them, what could possibly go wrong?!
fish.gif
In all the excitement I didn't really think there would have been a problem putting the little shrimp in there, but its a shame the [language] of a rainbow fish didn't see it like that!  He just though oow live dinner and went for one, but I'm not sure if he got it or not, one got to the plants and was fine.  But then the next one got it, attacked but not eaten.  With that [language] Rainbow fish got wiped out and plonked in a different tank.
Final score;
1 Blackberry Shrimp dead.
1 Blackberry Shrimp missing in action, presumed dead.
1 Blackberry Shrimp still alive but most lightly alone, most lightly having all sorts of mental issues after seeing his or her little brothers or sisters murdered!!

Maybe back to Leeds to get some more, as they were very nice, before they got eaten.

The rainbow fish that was eating them was moved to another tank.

I don't know how long the Leeds north on has been open as I only got into fish keeping in November but it does say on the MA website that it's one of the newest stores.

It's smaller than Leeds South but I still found it to have a good range and the staff were very helpful.

I live a lot closer to Leeds South but always like a trip around other fish stores and I was impressed with this one.

Yes I moved the offending fish out!

So part 2 of the story.

Because I was so fed up with the shrimps being eaten I had to get some more to replace the eaten one's.  We went to York MA and found out the tank I ordered just before Christmas had come in

So I ended up talking filters to the bloke and ended up coming out with there Aquamanta EFX 1500U and a few other bits and bobs and a card swiping of just over £200!!!!!! Doh!

   But still no new shrimps.

So off to Leeds we went.

Got to MA to tell the tail of the evil rainbow fish and how I needed to get some more shrimp!  We didn't just replace the one's that got eaten this time, we emptied there tank of Blackberry shrimp and got some Red Crystal shrimp and just for good measure got some Sakura Red Fire shrimp.  This time they all survived and will all hopefully do well until the new tank get's brought home and set up as there new home.

What's the scientific name for the blackberry shrimp?

I would assume they are just a Caridina sp jobby :)  or is that Caradina? hmm... either way lol I just cant spell!

What rainbows ate the shrimp!? Mental fish!

The trouble with rainbows is they are so food orientated! If you had netted the rainbows, put the shrimp in... then let the rainbows out, you'd probably find they got on with the shrimp just fine! All they see is you putting something food sized in the tank and being total food monsters... they just ate them!

I had the same problem with Cardinal Tetras! My cardinals are sooooo greedy! They are weird, they act like guppies, never seen cardinals like it! But i netted about 15 Blue Tiger shrimp into a very heavily 300L planted tank and the 15 cardinals in their ate every single one before they hit the bottom, they just assumed i was feeding them! Next time, i used net with shrimp in instead of tipping them out and i let them out straight into the plants and the cardinals got a feed afterwards and they only occasionally have the odd nip of a shrimp.

Just be careful  though, it isnt just rainbows, always be cautious putting food sized shrimp into a tank!

I believe the Red Crystal Shrimp are Caridina cantonensis, but as for the Blackberry shrimp I don't know, they just looked pretty They look just like the Red Crystal Shrimp but instead of being red and white the black and white!
yes.gif

The same for the Sakura Red Fire shrimp, I don't know the scientific name for them, but they look very similar to some Red Cherry Shrimp I have but not quite a full on red, but that could just be that they haven't grown in to there colour yet!!

As for the Rainbow I think is a Boeseman's Rainbow.  Well at least that's what it got sold to me as!!  But I got it at the same time as getting some other rainbow.
I asked for 3 Boeseman's Rainbow and 3 Madagascar Rainbow fish.  I put what I though was a Boeseman Rainbow fish in to what is now the Shrimp tank because it was getting bullied and looking somewhat worse for wears, it's now all fine so has move back with his fellow rainbow fish and 3 big Red Cherry Shrimp.

But I think the Rainbow fish might be going soon
bye2.gif
as I'm getting a new tank which will be for some what calmer fish slower swimming fish!

Having never heard them referred to as that, I was just wondering if they were a different colour morph of the cherry shrimp, in which case, you might find some different colours again coming along as they interbred. But it seems they are what I have seen as crystal black shrimp, and I don't know if you would have the same issue there.

Sakura Fire Red Shrimp are red cherry shrimp, bred to have a much deeper, fuller, red colour.
