Weighted Plants

I buy all my plants from PAH and they all come with a white ring and some sponge stuck to the bottom. I've always buried these rings when planting but all my plants seem to break at the point where they enter the sponge and weight. Should I remove the weights?

I like to plant my stems individually without weights. they will root themselves down pretty quickly.

Yes remove the weight and the sponge stuff and plant each stem individually
