I am going away for a week and wanted to know whether to leave the light on or off for the week as I don't have a timer.

My advice is get a timer. I have all my tanks on timers, it is the best way to control plant growth.

Yes get a timer, the electronic versions are about £5.

If you don't have any live plants in the tank, turn the light off.
If you do have live plants, try to get a timer and set it for 12 hours on and 12 hours off.
If you have live plants and can't get a timer, maybe have the room light on and tank light off, or leave the tank light on. The tank will be covered in algae when you get back but you can wipe it off.

Don't bother getting anyone to feed the fish while you are away. they will be fine for a week without food, especially if there are live plants in the tank. Just do a water change and gravel clean the day before you go. Feed the fish just before you walk out the door, and leave it until you return.

More fish die from overfeeding than starving.

Clean the filter before you go so it doesn't clog up while you are away. Wash filter media/ materials in a bucket of tank water and re-use the media. Tip the bucket of dirty water on the lawn. Do this a couple of days before you go so you know it is clean and working before you leave.
