Well this is my first post. I've had my oldest Betta (Soy Dog) for about 2 years and he is going strong. I've made many mistakes with him and I can't believe he has not died, but from my mistakes with him, I've learned how to take better care of my fish. I now have 2 new betta fish, but not on purpose. I have a a beautiful healthy one that is a little darling, but I rescued a skinny pathetic betta from my local petsmart.
He is staying near the top and panting. I have him in a jar at the moment because I don't want to infect any of my other fish tanks. He is staying near the surface, panting, weak, his gills seem to be inflammed and dark, and he is refusing to eat. I'm really not sure what to do with him. I put some more aquarium salt into his container. I would like to save him because he is a pretty green with hints of blue. . . thank you for any help.

The only thing I can suggest is get him into a larger container and do regular water changes with an aquarium salt and melafix regiment. Keep trying to feed him, and be sure to stick with the same food as bettas are very picky eaters and take a while to get used to a certain food, so if you rotate foods, he'll never get used to one. Other than this there's not much to be done unless there is any other specific ailment you can see he has. Just some good old fashioned TLC and keep your fingers crossed. Good Luck
