well one of my sunburst platies just had 6 babies and we have 2 more that are ready to pop!!!! so i had to run to the basement grab the 2 gallon tanks and set up nurseries for them. guess its time to upgrade from the 30 gallon to a 55!!! lol
how long before they are big enuff to move into the community tank??

1" in size is an over estimate, but you'd be surprsed what some of the fish can fit into their mouths. If you have a lot of fish that will give birth, you might want to let nature take its course after a couple batches.
 
Depending on your fish I would say they're completely safe at probably about 6-8 weeks. Different fry grow at different rates based on feeding, and they're type. It really all depends. I always let a couple fry stay in the main tank and as far as I know the few are still alive so if there's a lot of hiding spots I wouldn't be too worried about it. Just remember to keep the 2 gallon filtered. With all the times you should be feeding its going to need clean water to insure they grow up well.
 
For filtration, if you have an intake tube, you can put a stocking over the inlet to prevent fry from getting sucked into the filter.
