Waterdogs?

Waterdogs..not sure if you are referring to an actual dog (if so, wrong section

) first thing that came to mind was big type fish that are usually referred to as wet dogs, like oscars. Or is it something else entirely? Sorry, just curious

Water dogs are also known as Mexican walking fish or axolotls.

I think the thing being frowned upon is them being found in bait shops, I may be wrong though

Is the OP on about Axolotl's or Mudpuppies?
 
I've heard Axies by the name Mexican Walking Fish, Axolotl and Mexican Axolotl but not Water dog.... Whereas Mudpuppies.... Well, the name gives it away lol.

Well everyone else is on about Axolotls and all I get when I search "Waterdog fish" is Mudpuppies.
 

Mudpuppies or waterdogs are aquatic salamanders of the family Proteidae. Their name originates from the misconception that they make a dog-like barking sound.

Yes, they are a type of fish in the since they never lose their gills; they just work differently.  They turn into a salamander in mature form but walk around the bottom of your tank.  In the baby stage they have 4 visible toes on each foot, look pretty cool walking around. 
 
Was curious how many gallons per 'waterdog or waterpuppy or mudpuppy' you would calculate?  Also, are they safe in a community tank/planted tank?
