after a really bad weekend ive been to my lfs and he said something that made me think, he said you never know what the water coming out of the tap is like. which got me thinking is there any benefit in using ro water in my tropical tank?????

Unless there is something seriously wrong with your tap water, (or wrong for your fish setup), then I think most people stick to the tap water & a decent dechlor that deals with most things.
The problem is with RO you know exactly what it is, just water. From what I understand there is then quite a bit of involvement required to add all the various minerals etc back into the water that your fish / plants will need.

for the UK, you an say NO there is no need for RO in a freshwater tank. even for sensitive fish like discus. that does not men you can't use it, its just not something you need,

I just use our household filter system for my tropic tank. It has a charcoal filter in it that removes most things. I do not use RO, I'm not running a salt water tank just Cichlids.
