Hi

I did my usual water change last weekend - The tank became totally murky. like pea soup but white, Like tipping in a glass of milk.
So I did another water change a day later - the same thing!!
Then my two silver mollies past away!.
I did another water change today and the tank (8 gallon) is milky again. Now my mother red coral platty is swimming upside down and looks like she aint going to make it :(
The tank looks like it has a detergent appeaence with a residue on the surface. The fish are now gettting what looks like calcium deposits on them? I now have about 8 fish (but bear in mind that most are fry.
I dont know wheather it is white spot or something else?
The water board say there is nothing wrong with the water and it falls within spec - My fish beg to differ.

Any help woukd be great

Need water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, how long has the tank been set up, plus full stock list of fish, how many and which type, whitespot looks like they have been sprinkled in salt.

Nitrite zero, but amonia high at 1.2.
There is 1 adult Red coral platty, but it looks as though she may die. And 7 of her fry. Some tiny, others about 2cm in length. Ph is 7.8.
Tank been going for about a year or so.
I have seen my fish get white spot in the past but this looks like someone has splodged tipex on the gils and fins.
maybe I am guilty of having too many fish in the tank?, but i wanted my fry to be a little bigger before I gave them back to the FS. I have just had a little baby boy(3 months) and I guess I felt (paternally) like I had to look after them til they were bigger, I know that sounds daft.

I treated the tank last night for whitespot and added some salt.
The mother fish seems to be swimming ok now and the white splodges have dissappeared?
I am going to buy a hospital tank today.
Can anyone tell me if I will need another heater and filter for this. I want to clean out my other tank and then re add the fish to it. How long will this take?

Best wishes

Chris

Is it possible your filter has died or isn't working fully? When was the last time you checked it/cleaned it? When the water goes cloudy it tends to signify a bacterial bloom in the tank which would be why your fish then became ill, added to the fact that the ammonia in there is toxic to them.
Yes, you would need a filter and heater for a hospital tank. I find it worthwhile running extra filters in my bigger tanks so there's always one to hand if it's needed that is already mature. Also keeps the other tanks well filtered to boot. Having a spare heater around is always a good idea anyway, in case one should die/break in another tank.
Best of luck with your fish.
Hugs,
P.
