Hello. My 10 gallon has a water hardness of over 350. Its basically liquid rock...
What is the easiest and cheapest way to soften my water? (im a college student)
I dont want to use peat because its messy.

Is that the KH or GH?

Which fish do you want to keep/already keep?

messin with your water PH, GH and KH is fraught with problems. and, honestly, there is no "cheap" or easy way to do it.

perhaps the most 'reliable' way, is to make your water using RO as a base. there are a number of propitiatory mixes you can go for.

thing is, after you make any changes, water has this annoying habit of 'buffering' itself. in essence, it tries to make its way back to its original levels.

I'd look at fish that prefer hard water; that's easier and better than trying to change the water. Maybe some Tanganykian shell dwellers?
