Hi ,, does anyone know if it is alright to fill my fish tank with water from my bathroom tap as apposed to the main 'fresh' supply ? many thanks

I think it would depend on your header tank and distribution tank - "fresh" water is straight from the mains, but water from a bathroom tap has normally sat in a couple of tanks for some time in the loft or wherever. If these tanks are old or made of something unpleasant, or there are lead pipes in the system, you may not want to put the water in your tank.

As you can tell, I'm not a plumber or a chemist!

Tiger Barb is closer to the truth there. Check what's in your loft.

My wife has nagged me into not drinking from the bathroom tap....

Everyone knows its so much nicer!

Personly I just use the bathroom tap, im really not concerned enough to carry buckets throughout the house as apposed to down the hall.

All you really need to do is flush the bog to get rid of any standing water. If you put your hand under the cold tap and turn it on it always gets colder after a few seconds; that's the standing water being replaced by fresh water.

Standing water in the pipes is not a concern in my mind, unless you go on a world tour for 6 months.
I (we?) are talking about the actual source of that water: Yes it is ultimately from the mains supply, but 'downstairs' the taps are fed direct from mains pressure - a closed system and thus 'safe'. 'Upstairs' water supplies come from large header tanks usually housed in the loft - this header tank is fed via mains supply (you hear it filling up after filling a bath / flushing etc). This source is considered dodgy now becuase the header tank may be open and can therefore get contaminated, or made of a material which in itself can contaminate the water - hell there could be a dead rat in there for all you know - have you checked recently - in other words, there will be a collection of unknown crap in there from any number of years past! Hence it is considered 'not as safe'.

Hope you're not all

I always use water from the bathroom, purely because its easier to fill buckets in the bath rather than the kitchen sink.

I've never had any problems, but i think i'll have to check it out.

Not all bathroom taps come from an attic tank. The four houses we have lived in had the bathroom water come straight from the mains. I always check because I don't like to clean my teeth in tank water. I sit in the attic next to the tank and get someone to run a tap for a few minutes - if no water goes in or out of the tank, then the tap must be connected directly to the mains. Depends on the builder I suppose!

True. It depends on the mains pressure available. A header tank effectively increases the pressure for rooms upstairs.
